Best Makeup Products for Acne

Some people will insist that makeup for acne can only worsen the problem but going without makeup is not possible for many of us. In fact, we encourage people who have acne to try products for coverage, protection and yes, even basic treatment to help fight those pesky zits. You, too can use makeup for acne. You only need to know which product to use and how much to put on.

The Truth About Makeup and Acne

Acne develops due to clogged pores that encourage the growth of certain bacteria. These bacteria in turn cause an infection that leads to the development of pus-filled, inflamed skin. The most important thing to remember when considering makeup for acne-prone skin is that once acne is present, your skin will require – no, demand – special treatment.

To start, look for makeup that is labeled “non-comedogenic” and “hypoallergenic”. These are some of the mildest you will find. You will also do well with products that have zero oils, fragrance and added color. Some makeup products such as foundations offer a one-two punch for concealing and fighting acne.

The increasingly popular batch of BB (blemish balm or beauty balm) creams, for example, are formulated with ingredients that not only provide coverage, they also moisturize, protect and correct problem skin. Look for brands such as Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Dr. Brandt, Maybelline and Dr. Jart+, all of which provide coverage and SPF 25 or higher.

Using Makeup For a Cover Up

One of the key functions of makeup for acne is concealment. The goal is to hide the red spots, blotches and blemishes that appear as a result of the condition. To start, use a primer with a green tint, such as Studio Secrets Professional Color Correcting Primer from L’Oreal. This color will neutralize the pink and red in your skin. Follow this up with another primer with a yellow tint in order to provide extra coverage and smoothness. For long-lasting coverage, apply a concealer using a brush.

Another trick you need to learn is the art of distraction. Eyes are naturally drawn to spots on the face, so your goal is to distract the eyes so attention is led away from pimples. Do this by using makeup to accentuate your best assets, such as your eyes. If you have zits on the cheeks, use a bronzer instead of a blush. To distract from acne spots on the chin, choose an earthy or neutral lip color.

Should You Stay Away From Makeup If You Have Acne?

There’s no need to go au naturel just because you have problem skin. Makeup can offer excellent coverage and protection and yes, it can boost your confidence. Just make sure to pick the product that is best suited for your skin type and that you follow a regular skin cleansing and treatment regimen to care for sensitive skin. Providing extra care for problem skin is paramount for beauty specialists.
