Is a Bad Hair Day Bad for Your Health?

We have all had a bad hair day. If you are like a lot of us, then you have probably noticed that everything goes wrong when your hair does not look nice. A team of researchers at Yale University have found that this problem can affect more than just your appearance. It can also have a negative impact on your self-esteem.

The Effects of a Bad Hair Day

The researchers found that people actually perform below their capabilities when their hair looks bad. Interestingly, the study also found that even thinking about having a blah hair day can have a negative impact. The men in the study reported that they felt less confident and more nervous when their hair did not look nice. The women in the study reported that they felt self-conscious, embarrassed and ashamed when their hair looked dull.

Amy L. Flowers, who is a psychologist, has stated that one’s appearance can have a positive or negative impact on his or her self-esteem.

Thomas Cash, a researcher who has done in-depth studies on body image, has stated that 25 percent of our self-esteem is determined by our body image. Therefore, it is nearly impossible for us to love ourselves and hate what we see when we look in the mirror. If we dislike our hair or another feature about ourselves, then we most likely think that other people find it unattractive also.

Bad Hair and Emotional Well-Being

The good news is that women are generally happy with the way that their hair looks after they have gone through their hair care routine. There was a survey done in 2010 that showed that 41 percent of women stated they liked their hair, and 19 percent of women stated that they loved their hair.

The survey also showed that 44 percent of women stated that a dull hair day had a negative impact on their mood.

Twenty-six percent of the respondents stated that they cried because of a bad hair cut. Women spend a lot of money to keep themselves from having a dull hair day. The average cost of a haircut is $39, and the average cost of a hair coloring is $65.

The Importance of Taking Care of Your Hair

Flowers stated that it is very important for women to take care of their hair. If you go somewhere with your hair unkempt, then that could give people the impression that you do not care about the way that you look.
