Supplies Needed for Cosmetology School
One of the most important things for any beauty school student is the cosmetology school student kit. This is the kit that contains everything students need to offer basic cosmetology services to their clients. These kits are the primary tools students will learn to use in cosmetology school.
What’s in a Cosmetology School Student Kit?
Each state varies slightly in what they require students to know on their licensing exams. This means the tools they will need to train with can also vary. Your school will give you a list of exactly what items will be needed when you register for classes. Your kit will be based on this list, and there will be a few additional items you may need to buy. These are usually included in the kit:
- Disposable Gloves
- Hair Clippers
- Razors and Shears
- Curling Iron and Flat Iron
- Hair Brushes
- Combs
- Rollers
- Clips
- Capes
- Mixing Bbowls
- Mannequin Head
Types of Cosmetology School Student Kits
Student kits usually come in one of three forms:
- Rolling Aluminum Cases
- Rolling Suitcases
- Rolling Kiosks
No matter which form you choose or are assigned, the kit will contain a number of tools you need in your coursework. If your cosmetology program also includes training as a manicurist, the kit will probably also include mannequin hands and feet, manicure tools, and the tools used for applying acrylic nails.
If you are completing barber training instead of a full cosmetology course, or in addition to your hairdresser training, your kit may be a bit different. Student kits for barber classes are more focused on men’s needs.
This includes:

The kits also usually include tools for sanitation and care. This is something that will be a focus in your cosmetology school education and will count for a large percentage of your certification exam score. This means it is very important to care for the tools in your kit and to follow all sanitation rules carefully.
