Why is Aloe Vera so Good for Skin Care?
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the aloe vera plant originated from Egypt about 6,000 years ago. Its leaves contain a gel that herbalists use to treat skin conditions, epilepsy, diabetes, burns, asthma, psoriasis, as well as osteoarthritis. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of aloe vera as food flavoring. However, many people use the gel from the aloe vera plant as a skin care product because of the following reasons:
Aloe Vera Skin Care Promotes Growth of New Skin Cells
The human skin consists of cells that age and peel off to give way to new cells. However, exposure to undesirable elements such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation and some diseases such as cancer may cause the skin to develop certain problems associated with the skin cells such as premature aging. Fortunately, aloe vera stimulates the skin and makes it easier for new cells to grow, according to a study carried out by the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Cosmetology at the University of Belgrade. In addition, results from the study showed that aloe vera gel absorbs anywhere between 20 and 30% of UV rays.
Enhances Healing of Wounds on the Skin
Injuries or burns can cause wounds on the skin. How such wounds heal can make the difference between smooth skin and skin that has unsightly scars. Researchers from the School of Medicine at the Tehran University found that using aloe vera gel to cover wounds on the skin reduces the risk of scarring significantly because the gel provides a mucous like membrane protection to the wound. This is in addition to the antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of the gel. In patients undergoing radiotherapy, the gel reduced the risk of patients developing radiation induced mucositis and oral candidiasis.
Aloe Vera Skin Care Reduces Psoriasis
This condition affects the skin causing irritation and redness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), psoriasis tends to affect people aged 15 to 35 years. This is where creams with aloe vera come in handy. WebMD recommends buying a cream that contains at least 0.5% aloe gel. Apply this cream on the body parts with psoriasis for a period of about four weeks. This will help reduce the symptoms associated with psoriasis.
If you would like to maintain a healthy and smooth skin, purchasing an aloe vera product should be a top priority.
