Cosmetology Student Success: Liza Gonzalez Ramos

For the month of September we are delighted to share the achievements of one of our North Seattle campus’ future professionals, Ms. Liza Gonzalez Ramos.  Liza was recognized for the strides that she has made to market herself, building her business and setting herself up for a  flourishing career.

About Liza Gonzalez Ramos

Not unlike many of our Evergreen future professionals Ms. Liza had chosen to pursue a separate line of work in nonprofit fundraising before deciding that the beauty industry was where she wanted to be. Long before deciding to pursue her passions Ms. Liza’s first job was in a salon, and she was always the go-to stylist for her friends special events. In college she had the opportunity to work in musical theater productions, which included taking a stage makeup course that really ignited the flame for her.  She shares, “My Cosmetology journey is long overdue, I chose Cosmetology because it pairs my love of working with people and my desire to be creative on a daily basis.” Ms. Liza likes knowing that the work she will be doing, will make a difference in the lives of her clients.

Once the decision was made to move forward, it was time to decide where to begin her journey. “I researched the majority of the schools in the area, but Evergreen felt right the moment I toured the campus and met with Blair, one of our amazing Admissions Counselors.  I wanted a school environment where I would feel supported by the educators and I haven’t looked back. ”

The Evergreen Experience

Since her time here Ms. Liza has really enjoyed the hair cutting portion of the Cosmetology program, “I like that you can be as technical as possible with a cut and then go in and allow your creativity to take the lead with creating texture and customization for the client.”
A particular hands on activity that stands out for Liza while she was building her skill and knowledge in her first few months of the program was “A creative perm project. We had to think outside the box and find items to wrap the hair with that would be out of the ordinary. Of course, I chose to wrap my perm with carrots and celery which was so silly and so fun.” She loves to be surrounded by the arts so activities like this fell into her interests completely.

Thinking as to where she feels she has the most strength in her skills and techniques, Ms. Liza shares, “I feel like it’s too early for me to have a specialty, per-say.” Her favorite services are hair-cutting and balayage, however in the future she would love to specialize in curly, coiled, and textured hair. “It’s fun when someone with curls comes in!” The time that she has spent on the salon floor, has been really rewarding for Liza, she loves that clients can leave the salon chair feeling like their best self.

The Next Step

Ms. Liza is such a brilliant stand out individual as it is, when asked what sets her apart from other stylists she responded by,  “My ability to make people feel comfortable and at ease. Trust is the most important part of the stylist- client relationship and I want my clients to feel great in my chair and out of it.”

Life after graduation is already something Liza is planning for. “After graduating I would love to work in a salon full time and grow my clientele. Once I have my clientele, ideally I would move into booth renting so I could work part time as a stylist and part time as a wig-maker for the stage.”
As to what would make a potential client come to her over another stylist “Clients should come to me because I exude joy. I love this industry and would like to have a clientele that know that I will listen and work hard to make their hair goals happen.”

For someone either toeing the line of joining the beauty industry or for a brand new student just starting-out Ms. Liza’s advice is, “Go for it! Don’t be afraid to to mess up or fail or try new techniques. The more you allow yourself this, the more successful you will be. EBC wants to see their students thrive and I’m grateful to be here!”

Ms. Liza Gonzalez Ramos is set to graduate late Spring 2020.
