3 Myths About Studying to Be a Barber

If you want to become a barber, there are some things you need to understand beforehand. Several myths about the course continue to affect some people’s decision to cut hair for a living.

This is more than a little unfortunate. Read on to learn more about these untruths, before you make a determination as to whether or not barber school is for you.

You Have To Specialize in Certain Types of Haircuts

At barber school, you can participate in many specialty programs that give you advanced training in a certain skill or style. These courses are shorter than a general hair program and tend to cover less material.

But, this doesn’t mean you have to take this specialty training in order to be competitive. Roger at MagneticBarbering.com says that you really need to be an “all around barber.” He goes on to say… “make sure you’re skilled in basic procedures as well as advanced techniques.”

You Need to Own Your Own Shop to Make Money

For many barbers, their long-term career goal is to open up their own shop and hire other barbers to work for them. It typically leads to bigger profits. However, this is by no means the only way to make money in the field.

Job opportunities in the beauty industry are expected to increase until at least 2022. meaning that there won’t be a shortage of work for those qualified in the field.

Location Is Everything

Many people think that location is everything to the barber who is just starting out, and that landing a job in a poorly positioned salon will keep them from reaching their potential. However, this is not the case.

Effective marketing and advertising brings in new clients, as does referrals from friends. By rewarding current clients who send you new clients, you maintain a steady stream of business simply by word-of-mouth.
