Cosmetology Student Success Story: Hannah May Catimo

Ms. Hannah May Catimo was recognized by our Everett campus this past month in an all school assembly. Her peers applauded as she accepted her award for the successful habits she’s showing this early on in her career as she continues to build her brand.

About Hannah May Catimo

Having a natural interest in all things create, it was only a matter of time before Ms. Hannah journeyed into the beauty industry.

“Before I enrolled in Cosmetology school, I was attending my first year of Cascadia College and majoring in Graphic Arts. I have a huge passion for photography, videography, graphic arts, lettering, and everything creative! A few months in, I decided that my major is something I’m able to teach myself through Youtube videos and experience. So I decided to look for different colleges and majors that I was interested in and passed through Evergreen Beauty College. I’ve always loved the beauty industry and what it has to offer, but I never thought of making it into a career. Then I started looking more into Cosmetology school and everything about it felt right. I found a new creative platform :)” shares Hannah.

We asked Ms. Hannah why Evergreen Beauty College over the others, and her response, “A few months back, I was touring Evergreen Beauty College and right away it felt like family.

The environment was so welcoming, everyone was nice and supported each other, and I was able to envision myself going here!”

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the Cosmetology program with us Ms. Hannah has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist:

“One of the areas I love most about my program is that the Cosmetology program offers a little bit of everything, while mainly focusing on hair. We get to learn about nails, facials, and lashes which lets us gain even more knowledge on a variety of different services. It’s really nice knowing that we have different options we could lean towards, if hair isn’t the only thing you’d want to do!”

“Just recently, we were assigned a project which was to create a vision board of where we see ourselves in 5 years. I found this helpful because it was an eye-opener for me and gave me a friendly reminder of why I’m doing what I’m doing. I want to use this talent to help other people around the world to feel good about themselves. I want to serve people who deserve it and I know that in the end, it will be so rewarding knowing that I’m spending my life making others happy!”

“Although we dabble in many areas, I’d say my specialty so far is men’s haircuts. Ever since we were taught how to do fades, it soon after became my favorite thing to do. It’s satisfying to watch everything get blended and the way it all comes together in the end. I have a keen eye for detail and love catching the tiny things that make a huge difference in a haircut. Even during my free time, I watch men’s haircut videos on Instagram and learn so many new techniques which helped me improve in my craft. Alongside men’s haircuts, I’ve enjoyed doing balayage lately. You can get as creative as you want with a balayage and I love learning the different styles!”

“As for what would set me apart from other stylist… well, every artist has their own style and techniques but I would say that I like to focus on personally connecting with my clients. I love getting to know who’s in my chair, I get to hear different life stories, jokes, etc. I make sure that they’re happy and know that they are being taken care of. For instance, I ask if they’d like water, need to use the restroom, or want a magazine to read. It’s a joy meeting and having new clients in my chair, and when there are, I always greet them with a smile and help them feel comfortable while they are. I like to assure them that I’m paying attention to their desires and that I’ll do my very best to create that as their end result. We never know what a client has been through before, if they had a bad experience at a salon or received bad customer service, but we’re there to comfort them. I always make sure that my clients leave with a smile on their face and the hair that makes them happy!”

The Next Step

With the end of beauty school fast approaching Ms. Hannah shares what’s to come, “After I graduate my program, I plan to work either at a lash lounge or barbershop for one or two years to build my clientele. I’m looking for a place that feels at home and where the stylists encourage and support each other. Eventually though, I plan on building and owning my own lounge/salon where I can create a style that reflects my personality!”

“As I close of the last months of my program, my advice for future professionals is to keep learning even after beauty school! The beauty industry is always growing and there is so much out there. We don’t even know what we don’t know and there is a lot we don’t know. Also, social media is huge in this industry! Let yourself be known and put your work out there for others to see and love. Encourage others, attend classes outside of school, gain knowledge, and have fun! Our job is to make people feel beautiful and help them KNOW that they are,” offeres Hannah.

Ms. Hannah May Catimo is set to graduate this coming new year, February, 2020. Everything here said about Hannah ( or May) as she introduced herself as when we met, is right on. I have loved my experiences with her and she has “gotten” my desires for haircut. I see her every 6 weeks and she does a wonderful job. Hope I get at least another 3 times w/her and her magic before she graduates.
