Cosmetology Student Success Story: Kait Field

About Kait Field

As for some people who join this industry, they start school and are unsure if this is the field for them. They may be hesitant on not knowing if it’s something they will enjoy doing long term or if they will have the knack for it. That wasn’t the case for Ms. Kait Field though as beauty has been a passion of hers since she was young. By the age of 14 she was watching Youtube videos and already learning about hair and make-up. “I have always loved doing hair. Whenever I would have sleepovers with my friends, I would always want to do their hair or makeup. Unlike most, I even loved waking up early and doing my hair and makeup before school. I graduated in June of 2018, and immediately started in a community college. Even being  enrolled in community college, I still had no clue what I wanted to do there which lead to me absolutely hating going to school every single day. I only stuck it out for 3 months before deciding to enroll in Evergreen! I’m really happy I made the decision to switch paths because now I really look forward to coming to school every day and enjoy everything I get to do,” Kait shares.

Living close to the Canadian border Ms. Kait had a few options on schools to attend, “I did a lot of research on different beauty schools to find the right one for me. I almost went to one in Bellingham, then one in Canada. After looking at different beauty schools I finally found Evergreen Beauty College to be the best fit for me. Originally I planned to go tour their Everett campus even though it was quite far from home and that’s when I found out that they were about to open a Mount Vernon location. It felt perfect and in the end I’m happy with my choice. Driving the extra half an hour to get here every day is worth it because I feel like the teachers really care about making sure we understand what we are learning. The educators have so much knowledge and I feel comfortable asking them for help when I don’t understand information or techniques,” added Kait.

The Evergreen Experience

Ms. Kait Field, a cosmetologist student, demonstrates her skill with color here as she beautiful blended this fresh look.

Students stood to clap out of joy while tears of happiness streamed down the face of Ms. Kait Field at our all school assembly last month as she was recognized for her success in marketing and building her business, a goal she has been working extremely hard in.

Since starting the Cosmetology program with us Ms. Kait has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far, and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist:

“I love learning all the different techniques and skills used for the services we have learned during this program. Getting to strengthen my skills and learn new techniques has been so interesting. I get so excited every time I get a client in my chair because I’m able to make them feel beautiful just by taking care of their haircare needs.”

“I have also loved doing color and would consider it a great strength of mine! At the start, I was so nervous to start any color and lightening services because, unlike some of my classmates, I had absolutely no experience in this area before school. Since then, I have gotten in a ton of practice using lightener and color, and I have loved it. I’m hoping to specialize in all applications of color when I graduate from school!”

Ms. Kait showcases a beautiful color transition and style on one of her many clients.

“So far in school I have really found the Nuts and Bolts business program and assignments to be the most helpful. I’ve always been a shy person, one who really doesn’t know how to talk to people. Nuts and Bolts however has taught me how to build my confidence and has made me more comfortable talking to my clients, which is a key aspect of our industry. Having all this information on how to run our business and make clients happy has been extremely beneficial, and has really helped me grow as a business woman,” Ms. Kait expresses.

“As for what sets me apart from other stylists? That would be my determination and drive. I was really scared to come to school, but now that I have found my passion I am not going to let anything stand in my way of being a successful cosmetologist. I’ve had some setbacks throughout my schooling with my dad passing away in November but I didn’t let it stop me. I took a short break from school, and once I came back I was completely ready to continue working as hard as possible. A drive that I can utilize even after I leave here to find a job in the industry. I also believe in strong customer service. When I have clients come in, I want them to feel loved and appreciated. To ensure my clients feel as though they are getting the absolute best service, I’ve implemented really thorough consultations. During my services I always make sure to ask if anything is needed along with making sure I educate myself prior on products before I’d recommend them to my clients. I don’t want them to think I’m trying to push products on them but rather educating and prescribing something that they’ll need and love. I truly appreciate everyone who takes time out of their busy schedule to come and sit in my chair, as my success wouldn’t be what it is without them, ” Kait expresses.

The Next Step

A mens cut for this gentleman was executed beautifully by Ms. Kait Fields.

When asked what her plans are for after school, Kait replied, “I am hoping to find a job in Bellingham at a salon so I can continue to build my clientele and strengthen my craft. As for long term, I’ve always wanted my own space to do my own thing so I hope to eventually run my own salon from home. So hopefully someday I will have a small legitimate business all on my own!”

Almost half way through with her program, Ms. Kait shares some things she has learned along the way, “My advice for incoming students is to never compare yourself to others. I know it may be hard to feel like you’re doing well sometimes, especially if you struggle with things at first but if you compare yourself to others’ success you will never be happy. Instead, work even harder to perfect your craft and focus on what you are working towards!”

Ms. Kait is set to graduate this July, 2020. And if you are interested in following Kait throughout the rest of her program, you can check her out on Instagram: @beautybykaitjoy.
