Esthetics Student Success Story: Alicia Mills

About Alicia Mills

Prior to joining the Esthetics program, Ms. Alicia Mills worked in an Orthodontics office for many years. After having her two daughters she took some time off to raise them and to help provide childcare for her niece and nephew.

Now that they’re in school, Alicia has the time and was able to pursue this next step.

When asked why she chose the Esthetics program Ms. Alicia replied, “A few things drove my passion and led me to enroll into the Esthetics program. As a consumer of beauty products, I know how difficult it is to navigate different brands, products, and ingredients. Trying to determine the necessary elements of a routine from the current trends, can also be confusing. So understanding the fundamentals helps me to educate not only myself, but also my clients which has been incredibly rewarding. With my thorough communication, treatments, and products, I can help them to achieve their goals.”

Knowing that a career in Esthetics is what she wanted, Ms. Alicia now had to find a school to start her journey. “I had heard wonderful reviews on Evergreen Beauty College, and I even know some of their graduates. When one of their schools opened up here in my home town; Mount Vernon, I jumped on it. Commuting to the Everett location wasn’t going to be feasible for me and my family so needless to say I was thrilled at the opportunity to enroll,” Alicia shares.

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the Esthetics program with us Ms. Alicia has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far, and what sets her apart from other skin therapist:

“I appreciate our chapter power points that lead into class discussions, as it reinforces my distance learning at home. Having the chance to discuss and ask questions has always been helpful to me. The most beneficial resource is the incredible amount of hands on training that is available to me. That in itself, has really helped me to grow in confidence.”

“I’ve definitely labeled myself as a “fix-it” person. When you have a problem to solve, I enjoy being the one to help come up with a solution. This program allows me to problem solve and educate everyone who comes in for an appointment with me.  Between providing 60 minutes of undivided total relaxation, client education, and delivering result driven treatments, it’s a win-win!”

“I’ve also been told that I have an incredible amount of patience, which I believe is needed in this industry as problems aren’t solved overnight. When you speak to me, you will feel confident that I’m listening, and that I really hear you. I’m someone who takes my time and has a very methodical approach to the things I do. Being that I’m a non-judgmental person, I’m not here to criticize anyone on their choices and really can get along with anyone. I’ve always been a strong communicator which is something that is imperative in this career and something I’d consider to be a strength of mine.”

“My goal for each client is for them to understand what I’m doing, and why I’ve chosen specific treatments and techniques for them. Facial massage is another absolute favorite during my treatment. Being able to witness their demeanor change during massage, and the relaxation that follows, is a huge payoff for me. When you’re on my treatment table, you will have my full attention. You will know that the treatment chosen was selected as a result of your specific needs and concerns regarding your skin. Relieve some tension, arm you with some education on how to care for your unique skin, and help you to feel cared for in our 60 minute facial service, that’s how I know I’ve done a great service,” concluded Alicia.

 The Next Step

Ms. Alicia recently started this journey but that hasn’t held her back from planning a bright future, “Prior to graduation, I will have my business plan finalized and am prepared to get started immediately thereafter. I will have a space inside of Genesis Salon and Spa in downtown Mount Vernon. From there, our family will be investing in real estate to open a building of our own while remaining in Skagit County. A salon and full spa will be a dream realized!” Alicia shares excitedly. A clear focus and dream in mind only brings Ms. Alicia that much closer to grasping them, and we can not wait to see them come to fruition.

If you’re thinking of starting a career in the beauty industry Alicia shares some advice, “One of the many things I’ve taken away from this program, is that you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Like a lot of us, I had doubts about starting over, and even learning new things. But from the moment I walked through these doors, I have felt so incredibly supported and affirmed in my choice to enter this program. Be ready to show up, work hard, learn from your failures, and push yourself so that you can maximize all the tools and skills you will receive. We can all do hard things!”

Ms. Alicia is set to graduate April, 2021.
