How to Choose Between Going to Cosmetology School or College

Many students always ask themselves whether to go to college or a beauty school.  The truth is that choosing a technical institute or college is a long and arduous process.  The ideal school will meet the students’ needs and allow them to pursue their dream career.

Cosmetology School vs. College

When push comes to shove, college is not a good choice for make-up artists, beauticians and hair stylists.  Unlike cosmetology school, they do not give students hands on training.  For this reason, college should be left to people who want to study more theoretical fields.

How to Select the Right Cosmetology School

There are currently hundreds of cosmetology schools across the country.  In order to select the right school, students must know what to look for in a course.  Listed below are some factors consumers should consider when choosing a school.

  • The cost of the course.
  • If there are any scholarships or grants available.
  • If the course fits in with the student’s other obligations.  For example, full-time workers may want to take night classes.
  • Students need to decide what specialty they want to train in.  Most schools offer courses in make-up artistry, hair styling, massage and nails.
  • Is the school reputable?

The best way to check whether or not a school is reputable is to see if it is accredited.  If the school is not accredited, their qualifications will not garner the respect of employers.  The quality of the courses may also be questionable.  Reputable schools are accredited, have a comprehensive curriculum and hire industry experts as tutors.

It is also important to assess the length of the course.  Those who want to start working immediately may want to enroll in a shorter course.  Students in this situation should not compromise quality for length.

It is also worth noting that some schools offer career placement and internships.  These programs help students find work as soon as they have graduated.  The students that qualify for job placements are generally those who have shown promise in class.

Lastly, students should read reviews about their school.  These reviews will give them information on how past students felt about the course.  Some reviews will even talk about the career opportunities they received as a result of their qualification.
