Requirements For a Nail Tech License

If you want to start a new, exciting career without enduring years at a university, then you should consider getting your nail tech license! Nail technicians perform a variety of treatments that help improve the health and appearance of nails.

This is can be a great career because it allows you to have fun while being creative. It also allows you to help people feel good about themselves. Below is the process for getting your nail license.

Step One

You need to have completed your high school diploma or GED. Most schools today require a high school diploma or GED before applying, which is why you want to get your high school diploma or GED if you do not already have it. There are some high schools that allow students to take nail technician courses before they graduate, but in most cases you want to be prepared and finish your high school education first.

Step Two

You will need to complete an accredited program. These programs cover how to perform manicures, pedicures, and skills for being an effective nail tech. You can also learn about hand massages, reflexology, and applying acrylic nails. The amount of time that it takes you to complete a program can vary, but many students are able to complete the program within six months. It is important to note that you will also have to demonstrate your skills outside the classroom. The cost of completing a nail tech program can vary greatly, depending on the school.

Step Three

The final step is to take the state licensing exam, which consists of both a written and lab test. You must earn a passing grade on both parts of the exam. After you pass the examination, you can begin working in a salon, day spa or nail salon. Once you have a couple years of experience under your belt, you can also choose to open up your own salon. The job market for nail technicians is expected to grow by 13% by 2026 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is awesome! The need for talented nail technicians expected to only grow from here!

Additionally, many nail technicians advance their career by taking other courses, such as cosmetology or esthetics. This can help you branch out into other beauty services you can offer your clients! Check out this blog post about one of our graduates and what she did with her nail tech education!
