Esthetics Student Success Story: Jocelyn Martinez

About Jocelyn Martinez

Hearing our future professionals stories as to why they decided to enroll in beauty school and what brought them into this career is always so different and so unique. Just by asking them a few questions makes you get to know them so much as a person and as a Stylist/Esthetician/Manicurist.

“Before enrolling into Evergreen Beauty College, I was going to Yakima Valley Community College. I had entered my 2nd year of college still having no clue what I wanted to do in the long run, but I knew I wanted to help others. I was chasing money as a career until one day I finally listened to everyone around me. I would always get complimented on my nails, makeup and lash extensions. Half way through college I knew I should follow my passion in the beauty industry and do what I love. I adore knowing that one day I will become the Esthetician of my dreams. I will be the Esthetician that everyone wants to book with because I love my career. This is who I was meant to become.” Shares Jocelyn.

While chatting with Ms. Jocelyn, we asked why she choose to go into the Esthetics program specifically, she shares, “I chose Esthetics because I have so much passion towards the beauty industry. I have always loved to do my makeup, lashes and body waxing. I knew this would be the right path for me. I also chose this path to help others feel beautiful inside and out.”

Evergreen Experience

Such a beautiful before and after of one of Jocelyn’s eyelash extension clients.

In April of 2021, our Yakima campus started up their first ever class for the Esthetics program. Also in April of 2021, Jocelyn Martinez started as one of our morning Esthetics future professionals. Since starting, we asked Jocelyn what she likes the most about her program, she said “The thing I love the most about my program is body waxing, lash extensions and makeup. I love to do body waxing because it helps a lot of people who struggle with razor bumps and razor burns. Lash extensions makes a women feel beautiful, even though they already are beforehand as well. They also make you feel like the boss you already are. Makeup gives you confidence. It helps you feel put together even if it’s just lip gloss. Honestly all these 3 make me feel like I’m giving the client a superpower. I love it!”

As she goes through her program, Jocelyn shares with us what she thinks her strengths and specialties are right now. “My strengths are that no matter the task you give me, I will make it my priority. For example, waxing. I knew I would love it so I made it my passion. I’m now fast a waxing and specialize in all the details. I’m now my friends, co-workers, neighbor’s and family’s favorite Esthetician for waxing, not only because they know me but because I make them comfortable, confident and I give them all my attention during their service. You are my priority when you come to me for a service.”

Talking more about her and her program, Jocelyn tells us what assignments have helped her the most in school. “An assignment that was given to me that was helpful was motivational videos and motivational packets. Motivation, well what can I say, an average human doesn’t always have motivation but they do have discipline. That’s what helped me. Discipline. I control what I want. Two things I want is to get A’s in all my test and get my Esthetician license before October 30, 2021.  I’m setting myself up for success.”

The Next Step

When thinking about graduation and the next step after, Jocelyn has big plans already thought out. “After I graduate my program, I want to rent out a booth at a spa here in Yakima. I then want to move out of Yakima and open up my own business elsewhere. I will always update my clients on my Facebook and Instagram. I know I won’t struggle because people who love your service and want to continue to see you, will travel for you. I know the service I give to people is fantastic because I’m devoted so I truly feel like I’m setting myself up for success.”

A very clean eyebrow wax done by Ms. Jocelyn. Look at that shape!

We asked Jocelyn what sets her apart from other estheticians and what makes clients want to book with her, she said “What sets me apart from others is my dedication, my passion and my service. When you are my client, I treat you as I would treat myself. I treat you as my #1.  When you come to me for an eyebrow wax, I don’t take 5 minutes, sit you down, wax your brows and take your money. What I do is offer you a blanket, I give you a consultation incase you want to add another service or have any questions. I take 30 minutes for a brow wax; I wax your brows and then I style them. I get in there and get all those stubborn hairs that don’t come off with wax. I put 110% of my effort into giving excellent services.

Once your wax is finish, we talk about your experience and then I help you up from the table so that you don’t get dizzy and walk you to the front. I make my clients feel like they have a safe place. I give you an excellent service with all my passion and effort. I dedicated myself to get this amazing career. I will never stop learning so that I can always take advance classes to further my education.” Jocelyn shares.

Before we finished talking with Ms. Jocelyn, we lastly asked her what kind of advice she would give incoming students and people who are thinking about enrolling. “Advice that I have for incoming students: Keep thriving for success. Good things are hard to get. The first thing is giving yourself the ability to try. You know how many older people say “I wish I would’ve tried; I wish I could go back and do it differently” Well don’t make that same mistake. Keep going, give yourself the opportunity to experience and learn. If somethings bothering you and it comes to your head twice, open up about it.

If you can’t get the lash extension to stick to the lash, try a different method. If you need help with your test and need to retake it. Don’t beat yourself up for it, try asking for help or try a different method of studying. Trying is giving yourself the ability to do greater things.”

Jocelyn is estimated to graduate in October, 2021. If you would like to follow her on her journey as she finishes her program, her social media handles are: Instagram: @beautywithjocy. Instagram: Makeupbyjocelyn25. Facebook: Beautywithjocy.
