Cosmetolgy Student Success Story: Jordan Croft
A journey starting in Montana and ending in Washington, Ms. Jordan Croft was on a mission to start a career that embodied her creative expression. It wasn’t soon after being settled that our Yakima location recognized Jordan as she began to show successful habits connecting with her social media followers all while making a name for herself.
About Jordan Croft
Like many others who look into this industry, Jordan was looking for a different pace and freedom for expression! “For me, it all started when I was younger, I would always play salon with my family by giving them haircuts and pedicures. I even once put an entire tub of strawberry yogurt on my brothers head and told him it would make his hair pink! Before coming to school though I lived at home in Montana and worked as a barista and a cook at a restaurant. I have always wanted to be a part of the beauty industry for many reasons and looked specifically into cosmetology because it covers a wide range of topics. I love the freedom this industry can offer you, I can be covered in tattoos and have whatever piercing I want and it is still an acceptable trait in this field. Not many other professions give you that freedom to truly express yourself like this one does,” shares says Jordan.
“So when it came time to look into beauty schools I chose Evergreen Beauty College, mainly because I wanted to go out of state. When Googling cosmetology schools in Yakima, WA it had EBC popping up with the best reviews. Actual client reviews too! After exploring the website more I found out EBC was one of the top 5 rated schools in WA state. When I talked to Amber; the admissions councelor at the time, on the phone she seemed scary. When I met her in person though, she was the cutest. Covered in tattoos and a down to earth person she was not at all what I pictured over the phone. She really put me at ease about enrolling into school. As I walked through the school on my tour even all of the students were so nice and welcoming, and right there and then I knew that I wanted to enroll because there was something about the environment there that made me feel at home,” shares Jordan.
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the cosmetology program with us Ms. Jordan has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist:
“Since starting my program here with Evergreen I have enjoyed many things such as braiding and styling; a favorite of mine. Any time I get to manipulate the hair into different shapes or designs has always been a favorite. I like doing cornrows as well because you can make them into any size and it requires another level of precision. Men’s manicures are fun to do as well because men typically don’t take great care of their nails, so there’s plenty of build up and work to do in order to have a great result (which would normally gross someone out, but I love!). Lastly, I enjoy learning about the science that goes behind what we do. Like I shared earlier, there’s just so many different opportunities and avenues to explore in this field, that anyone really could find something they enjoy.”
“What assignments have I enjoyed in school? I would have to say the bingo sheets we have been assigned because I love anything bingo. They’ve helped me to set goals and have motivated me to get to that next BINGO sheet. I personally like to stay on track or ahead so I finish all my bingos more quickly than required. I also like that our educators would allow us to practice styles on each other and have competitions within the school which always keeps the day fun and engaging!”
“At the end of the day though, we all have our own strengths and I am pretty confident that braiding and waxing services are mine. I have developed the necessary skills to keep tension during the braiding which make the braids look good. Not only can I keep my work neat but I know how to do a variety of different braids which allows my clients a broader range of styles and looks that I could re-create. I’m also quick, precise and sanitary with waxing; especially brows!”
“I think style also plays a big part in what sets me apart. My style is more on the alternative side, but I am able to adapt to other styles. Along with personality. I am easy to get along with, helpful, not afraid to take on new challenges, and I’m creative to boot. As for a way that would sets me apart from other stylist, I would have to say having a different interpretation of something than the rest of the group; sort of like putting my own spin on things. I can think outside the norm if you. I can also do any style of make up: quinceaneras, weddings, natural, men’s makeup; both natural and glam, halloween makeup and anything in between. Since I am a certified makeup artist I can offer makeup services with professional, quality makeup on top of caring for their hair which can be beneficial to the client so they don’t have to find two separate people to give them a complete look.”
The Next Step
Ms. Jordan already has plans in motion as she’s preparing to transition into the real world of beauty. “I have a job with a salon called Vixen and Tod in Hayden, Idaho once I graduate. One of the reasons I wanted to be a part of this salon was because of the welcoming environment. The owner isn’t super uptight and encourages a relaxed and calm vibe. Additional education opportunities being a part of this salon was also a huge benefit, which will ensure I continue growing as a stylist. I actually met the owner through a friend after she had connected with her in a networking group. It fell into place from there! I wasn’t really looking for places to go after graduation at that time but am thankful for the exciting opportunity,” Jordan expressed.
“If I had to leave some advice for any cosmetology students that will one day follow suit, it would be not to get a negative attitude and to buckle down and get your stuff done. If this is something you are truly doing for yourself, don’t let other people’s opinions or negative experiences or thoughts influence your experience. The time you are in school is your time to make mistakes, don’t always play the safe route, take risks and learn from them. Try not to get discouraged when something doesn’t turn out perfect, you are in school after all. Lastly, don’t compare your work to others and degrade yourself. Everyone has their own unique style and the journey is in finding what your style will be,” Jordan offers.
