Cosmetology Student Success Story: Kaci Shoemaker
Our newest campus in Shoreline was excited to award their very first student; Ms. Kaci Shoemaker, this past month in an all school assembly for her social media outreach as she continues to build her clientele.
About Kaci Shoemaker
“I chose Cosmetology because I have always been passionate about hair and more recently passionate about makeup. Beautiful hair was that one thing that helped me gain a lot of confidence over the years so being able to give that same feeling to others fills my heart. It’s truly an art and I’m amazed by it everyday. Prior to enrolling in school I previously had an interest in Criminology but quickly realized that a career in that field would take an emotional toll on me that I wasn’t willing to make. I’ve supervised at Macy’s by the age of 19 which resulted in my love for business. I decided to do online schooling for my business degree but decided that course wasn’t for me either. All along the way I would often find my mind wandering back to the thought of being a stylist, even my friends and family encouraged me to just begin my dreams, my journey as a stylist,” shared Kaci.
“Looking into beauty school originally lead me to Toni & Guy prior to Evergreen’s merge. It wasn’t much of a choice in the beginning but I am glad that it actually happened. I honestly feel that in the last 3 months since they have transitioned us to Evergreen, I have completely changed and grown as a person and stylist. There is so much structure now and support from the Trieu family, in the end I couldn’t be more grateful for this change,” explains Kaci.
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the Cosmetology program with us Ms. Kaci has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist:
“For starters, one thing I have absolutely LOVE so far in my program is doing color projects on clients. Seeing that transformation from a dramatic change to a subtle cover up of greys is just amazing to me. I love the look on my clients faces when they see their hair at the end of their services!”
“As for assignments that have been the most helpful, I’d have to say that I’ve enjoyed the business aspects that have been introduced to us. It has helped connect the pieces to what I used to do as a supervisor, to how I can sell myself and my specialties as a stylist to the needs of my clients.”
“Since starting school I can say with confidence that I believe my strengths fall within color theory along with the adaptability to take on whatever client comes my way. From color to cuts to perms or relaxers, they will be in my chair and I will always welcome them with a good attitude and the strive to give them what they are looking for. I’m on the path to make a difference and having this mentality only aids in my success,” Kaci adds in.
“What sets me apart is that I will rarely, and I mean RARELY, turn away a client. I also commute 2 hours each way to get to and from school using public transportation so I am dedicated! My instructors, classmates and clients can always count on me being there because when you wake up at 4 in the morning to get somewhere, you’re going to get there early. There is no sleeping in for me, there is no “maybe I’ll go in a little late today.” For these reasons alone I find myself very reliable. No matter how tired I am, I always greet my clients with a great attitude to start or end their day. My passion to my clients and my success will always override that snooze button! My clients, today and in the future will always be able to count on me. I will always be willing to really listen to their needs and wants. Ask what they are looking for in their hair, not just trying to sell them the most expensive product or services. I strive to build that trust with my clients.”
The Next Step
Kaci eyes are set on her future as she shares her upcoming plans, “After I graduate, I’d love to quickly move into a salon and start working my way up to be a Master Colorist!”
“As this chapter is coming to a close I can offer advice to those that will one day be in my shoes, and that advice is to never stop trying even when a service doesn’t go your way. We are here to learn and we are here to grow. If you’re “perfect” all the time, would there ever be anything to learn? Also, try not to take classroom time for granted and STAY OFF YOUR PHONE!! Time flies by so quickly and soon you’re on the salon floor and then you’re done. The more you pay attention in the beginning, the more you’ll be able to thank yourself later. Most importantly, do not give up on yourself. This year was one of the most challenging years of my life. I’m exhausted, my body aches in ways I didn’t know it could ache, and there have been times that I’ve doubted myself and wondered if I should quit. The answer? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I have met the most amazing and supportive people during my schooling, people that understand what you’re going through. They will be there as your support system when things get tough. You really become a family,” expressed Kaci. Not given up on her dream, Kaci is taking on the task many others may pass by when it gets tough. Beauty school takes a lot of hard work and dedication, dedication Kaci shows time and time again.
