Digital Marketing Award: Andrea Davila
There is a vast array of reasons why people decide that beauty industry is where they are meant to be. Whether it be that they grew up in the salon environment because of their parents, or that they always loved doing their dolls’ hair as a child. The reasons are endless! I was very excited to discover the reason behind why Andrea Davila, the winner of the Digital Marketing Award for the Renton Campus, decided to enroll in the Cosmetology Program and to also learn about her experiences at Evergreen and what she has decided to do once she has completed her program.
About Andrea
Often times, there is a turning point in someone’s life and they discover their career path. Here’s Andrea’s story; “My senior year of high school, I decided I wanted to be blonde. I have dark brown hair naturally, so to keep the integrity of my hair, every 4-6 weeks I was in the salon getting a full head of foils. I loved going to the salon! All the girls were so friendly, they played good music, and made me feel good about myself. I slowly built an interest in not just my own hair, but in doing hair myself as a career. Before I was at Evergreen, I had just finished high school and never really liked essays or reading. I loved how cosmetology was going to be very hands-on.” As a matter of fact, the stylists that colored her hair, were the ones who recommended Evergreen to her, as they were graduates themselves! How cool!
During her time in the program, she has discovered her strength as a stylist. “I would say my strength is that I am always willing to learn, I don’t like being comfortable with what I know. I always love learning new ways of doing things such as a foil technique or balayage method. I love watching Cosmetology educators/stylists on Instagram.” Keeping up on the latest hair trends can lead you in the right direction and set you apart from other stylists. Way to go, Andrea!
The Evergreen Experience
A lot of our students start in one program and branch out into one or several of our other programs that we offer. Andrea is not only on her way to become a Stylist, she has also become make-up and hair extension certified while at Evergreen. She is also pre-enrolled to take our Eyelash Extension class this summer! What are some of Andrea’s favorite things she has experienced during her program? “What I love most about the program is doing color! Especially balayage, they’re so much fun and I love the creativity, there’s so many ways of doing them! I also really enjoy doing make-up on other future professionals and educators.”
Students not only learn practical services that will help them in their career, they also learn the business side of the industry through our Nuts and Bolts program. “I think Nuts and Bolts theory is really helpful because we’re not at school just learning hair, we’re also learning the business side of the job. How to build a clientele, how to dress, know what we really want to do when we’re finished with school (salon vs. booth rent) and simply how to be an overall professional.” The practical application of the N & B program can have such a substantial impact on the lives and careers of our future professionals.
The Next Step
What is Andrea planning to do once she completes the Cosmetology Program in September of 2017? She wants to work for a commission-based salon that has the opportunity for continued education. We love seeing and hearing that our students still want to learn and grow once they leave Evergreen and are out in the industry. We have no doubt that Andrea will do a phenomenal job once she has graduated. One thing that sets her apart from other stylists is, “I always pay attention to what the client wants and I always do my best in anything that I do. I want them happy when I leave my chair and always wanting to come back.”
One last thing that Andrea had to say as a little piece of advice for incoming student, “Look into/try new things out. You’ll never know what you can accomplish without trying. If I wouldn’t have gotten my hair done so often, I would have never met my stylists and who knows what I would have been doing now, but I am happy I found my passion.”
