Esthetics Student Success Story: Angelica Avila
We were thrilled to recognize our first esthetician, Ms. Angelica Avila, this past month at our Mount Vernon location for building her name in the industry. Hard work is paying off for this future professional and I am excited to share her story with you.
About Angelica Avila
“For a long time I had doubts on what exactly I wanted to do after graduating high school. Everyone seemed to have had a plan on what they were doing, so I did what everyone else was doing at the time by enrolling in community college. After what seemed like the longest year of my life, I finally decided to dropped out because I knew that I would never find my dream career being there. During this time I proceeded to work retail while later becoming a full time barista. I always knew that I wanted to do something beauty related, but I never actually saw it as a possibility because a trade school was never presented as an option as a post secondary education. My parents, as well as my educators at the time all pushed for college as a necessity and as a place for me to figure out what I wanted to do for my career, never taking into consideration what my own interest were.” Angelica shares.
“There were a number of factors that played into why I chose Evergreen, such as the drive only being about 15 Minutes away from home and even the fact that I could have a full on career in less then a year. I solidified my decision to enroll after meeting Jayna D’Aoust; our admissions counselor and learning about the Trieu family. Soon after I met with Jayna, she presented me everything the school had to offer and what the Trieu family was trying to bring to the community which made my choice way easier then expected. I instantly knew that I wanted to be apart of the new and growing family that was coming to our little county by being apart of the first esthetics class to graduate from Evergreen at the Mount Vernon campus!” Angelica adds in.
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the Esthetics program with us Ms. Angelica has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far and what sets her apart from other skin therapist:
“What I like most about my program is the changes you can see on both the outside and most importantly the inside. When I perform a facial I can see an instant change from the moment they come in to the moment they are done. I’ve had my share of the first timers who are usually uneasy, nervous and excited, but as soon as they are done they have this look in their eyes as if they’re walking on clouds and fully relaxed. Even well after their service.”
“As for what has been the most helpful for me in school? That would easily be the in depth demonstrations Ms. Sonya gives when we are learning something new or when we just don’t feel as confident in something. I have greatly appreciated her knowledge and guidance that she has given me whenever I have needed her.”
“I would say my specialties are temporary hair removal and facials. Loving them both equally, I decided to further my knowledge on them and took a sugaring and dermaplaining class during the course of my program, and I’m happy to say that I am certified in both. Each service has something I enjoy, but in the end they both give my client a different type of confidence and that’s what I love about it.”
“Being an empathetic individual helps set me apart from other estheticians, as I understand that it’s difficult to have self care for ones self. I like to go above and beyond what my clients expectations of me to help ensure I’m giving them the best of me each time. Showing my appreciation to my clients; with goody bags at every visit, adds to that unique factor they won’t find just anywhere and with any one. You see, when my clients book with me, my biggest goal for them is to enjoy an hour of pure bliss. Providing that self-care experience in the service they’re getting because I too know that life takes over & it get’s hectic. I want them to feel like the time spent with me is stress free & nothing else matters in that moment.” Angelica expresses.
The Next Step
As Angelica is moving into the last few weeks of her program we asked her if there was any advice she could offer to other individuals looking to start school with us and she shares, “My advice for incoming students would be to keep your eyes on the prize, but always make time for yourself. I am a big advocate for self care since, and it’s something that gets easily lost on our list of what we need to get done in our busy lives both in and out of school. I’ve had my share of frustrations when things may not be going my way, so I can’t stress enough how great it feels to take time out of a long day for myself. Don’t beat yourself over something that is going right in the moment. Even if it may seem like the world is fighting against you, but if you look at the bigger picture you are experiencing everything you are supposed to. If you look at the big picture, it will all lead back to your dreams & goals. As John Lennon put it best, “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”
With a bright future ahead of her, Angelica shares her plans for after she graduates. “Having had some time to think about what I want to do after graduating, I’ve decided that I would love to work at a spa for a bit to build some type of clientele. After a while of doing that I plan on going back to my lovely Evergreen to enroll into the nail tech program in Everett! I want to be able to learn all the trades I possibly can so I am able to provide as many services as possible for when I open my own salon & spa. Who knows, maybe in a few years I might just come back as an Instructor!”
