Esthetics Student Success Story: Marie Hynes
About Marie Hynes
Life tends to throw us curve balls when we least expect it. Before Marie started her journey at Evergreen Beauty College she shared with us that she was living in a different state and on different path; “Prior to beginning school in April I was focusing on getting my husband and I settled into our new home. I had been studying full time to become a Cosmetologist in California. Prior to this, Covid was at it’s worst, my husband was deployed and I was just trying to do my best at being a present dog mom while the world was wild.” Shared Marie.
“My journey to becoming an Esthetician wasn’t a straight course. I’m a military wife and had began a Cosmetology program in California; however, after receiving information that we’d be relocating to Whidbey Island and only being half way through a 1600 hour program I had to figure out what my options were. Unfortunately as it was a different state, my hours weren’t transferable.
I knew three things, I wanted to work in the beauty industry, I wanted to be my own boss and wanted to offer services that I was passionate about. Learning that I could be an Esthetician and fulfill these three goals and be finished in about 6 months I knew this would be my new career path.” Explains Marie. When we asked Marie why she chose Evergreen Beauty College she explained: “I chose Evergreen because I had a friend that had already gone through the program and raved about how great it was. Not even two years later and she’s a thriving Esthetician at Pure Spa here in downtown Mount Vernon…
basically, goals!”
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the Esthetics program, Marie has shared some of the highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far, and what sets her apart from other Estheticians. “What I like most about my program is not only the chance to make a visual difference in someone’s skin but give them some time to themselves to relax. I’ve always been someone to treat myself (probably more than you should) and if I can pass this energy onto others I’m happy!” States Marie. When it comes to what has helped Marie so far she explains, “The assignments I’ve found most helpful are the hands-on work we usually complete in class or have extra time to complete at home. I don’t retain information nearly as well reading as I do doing so anytime we have projects I’m know I’ll really be learning the subject at hand.”
While in the Esthetics program Marie has found her niche with eyelash extensions and custom facials; “My biggest and most shocking strength is in lash extensions. Being a old Cosmetologist, I’ve taken lash extension trainings before… and absolutely hated them! However, starting over again something just clicked. It’s actually been very exciting to see the HUGE improvement in my first couple practice sets here over my best sets last year in California. In addition to lash extensions, I’ve really focused on perfecting my custom facials. I love adding new tools, trying new products and always including a goody bag with some testers for my clients to take home. It’s such a relaxing service, it’s easily my favorite.” States Marie.
When it comes to Marie’s strengths and what she offers to her clients she explained, “What sets me apart from other Estheticians is my treatment set up and aftercare. I always make sure to have a warm and inviting set up including two cozy blankets, a light board with my brand ‘Maple Skin Beauty’, some faux candles, extra business cards and a catch all dish for smaller items like earrings or keys. In addition to my treatment set up I love spoiling my clients with aftercare goodies! I keep water bottles on hand for any client that needs some extra hydration and every service I offer includes a custom goody bag which includes a business card, sticker, scrunchie, chocolate, product sample and face mask you can infuse with your favorite serum or toner.”
The Next Step
As Marie plans her future within the beauty industry, she also gives advice for incoming students. “My current career plan/goal is to find a booth rental in downtown Mount Vernon or possibly a Sola Studio in Bellingham. I’d really love to have my own space that I can customize and create as my for myself and my clients. As of now my service focuses would be facials and lash extensions, my two best treatments. I intend on focusing on these two services to really perfect my skills and ensure they are best services possible.” Explains Marie. “My advice would be don’t miss school and really apply yourself. I know it can be uncomfortable to complete services on people you don’t know or make regular social media posts but these are things you have to do! So try to make the most of it, find a way to make it fun over anxiety ridden. I promise you, there will always be a supportive person at school available to you, so take advantage while you can.” States Marie.
