Hair Design Student Success Story: Dean Sayson

About Dean Sayson

“Enrolling into Evergreen’s Hair Design program back in April of 2019 was pure in purpose of changing careers, and to start something new. I’ve always worked in Sales and Retail Management prior to school and a few years ago my fiance told me to check out barber schools, that I would be great at doing hair. In January 2019, we had a loss in our family, I was in between jobs, and we had just moved back to the Everett area. I was lost, and it was a great opportunity to make the change in my life. My fiance was right and I absolutely love what I do,” Dean confides as he shares a little about himself.

We asked Mr. Dean why he chose Evergreen Beauty College to start his new journey into something new, and his response to our question warmed our hearts, “My mother in law was in the Master Esthetician program in Everett when I decided on the career change. I’ve always heard great things and my mother in law was enjoying her program so far as well. I decided to tour the Everett campus and immediately felt welcomed and comfortable.

It felt right.” Hearing that not only had Dean felt that connection he was searching for, but knowing that his family member must had felt that too shares with us that we’re creating the right atmosphere for our student body.

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the Hair Design program with us, Mr. Dean has made many impacts, from the positive encouragement, and comradery for his classmates to the way he executes his services. Dean’s always there to lend a hand when needed as well as helping guide his fellow students in men’s cuts of any kind. Recognized in an all school assembly for going above and beyond, Dean accepted an award acknowledging his dedication exuded daily. Sharing some of his highlights of what he has enjoyed, what has helped him so far and what sets him apart from other hair designers, Dean explains:

“One of the area’s I have enjoyed most is doing haircuts, men’s or women’s. I have a strong passion for the barbering side and love doing fades, tapers, line-ups, and hot towel shaves. I’ve always loved getting my haircut and enjoy styling my own hair. I’ve always loved the way I feel when I get a sharp haircut so I aim to give my clients that same feeling I’ve felt. I would also say that the volunteer opportunities, which give back to our community has been extremely rewarding as well. I’ve participated in the last two community events organized by EBC, and multiple events my educators needed students for. These events have been extremely helpful in perfecting my craft. Most importantly, we’re helping provide a service for families in our community for free, which makes me feel amazing knowing I’ve helped someone feel good about themselves.”

“As for my specialty? It would be doing fades, or tapers. I’m very comfortable using clippers and trimmers since I used to buzz my own head for years. Honestly, I’m truly addicted to the craft of barbering. Its satisfying for me to get that smooth blurry transition. Fades are my thing, and everyone knows it. I’ve also been told I’m a warm inviting soul. I enjoy getting to know people and finding common ground, something we can relate to is something I love. I have a genuine interest in whoever’s sitting in my chair and I want them to feel comfortable. To gain their trust. My passion for the craft truly shows in my work.

I aim to exceed my clients expectations every time they sit in my chair as my goal is to make them feel like a million dollars before leaving. I feel I’m very professional and thorough from the start of the service to the end, it’s truly something that sets me apart from the other stylist,” Mr. Dean shares.

For Dean Sayson, a canvus extends to the individual sitting in his chair as barbering and  the details is where his passion is.

The Next Step

As Mr. Dean is finishing and closing out the last of his hours, he gives insight on his next steps after school, “My goals are to work at a barbershop and start building my brand and my clientele as I continue to perfect my craft and continue to learn. Eventually I would love to be able to open my own shop and provide classes for other stylists, barbers and students.”

Searching for meaning, Dean offers words of advice for any that are looking for meaning as he once had, “Enjoy the journey and trust the process because it can get frustrating at times but never lose focus of why you’re starting this journey. Things get easier with practice and time, I promise. Be sure take pictures and document your progress, it flies by and it’s amazing to see how much you improve with each service!”
