Hair Design Student Success Story: Israel Suarez
Our Yakima campus recognized one of their Hair Design students in his last month of school as he builds the tools of success for this industry. Mr. Israel Suarez leaves already ahead of the game!
About Israel Suarez
Sometimes it takes working towards a different career path to figure out that maybe you want something else out of life. Israel was one of those individuals looking for something different. “Originally I went to CWU for about a year before I had to take a year off to work. During that period, time passed and I decided where I was going to school wasn’t where I wanted to be. I wanted a fresh start. I chose this industry because it was appealing to me. More specifically I chose Evergreen Beauty College because they are so oriented on teaching their students what needs to be taught for success. Out of the few schools I looked into, this one stood out from the rest. All the way from the programs they offered, to the people that work here. When you walk in it is very family felt and that grabbed my attention from the start,” shares Israel.
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the Hair Design program with us Mr. Israel has shared some of his highlights of what he has enjoyed, what has helped him so far and what sets him apart from other hair designers:
“As I close out my program and look back on my experience, I loved how versatile one can be within this program with what is being taught here. I’ve learned so much more than I traditionally would have thought I would’ve. It’s not just a place where women do styling and color services. We’ve learned how to braid, updo styling, different color application and techniques, perming, etc. There’s a lot that goes on behind the chair most don’t realize. I’ve also had many assignments that have helped me take away great product knowledge. Understanding the products we offer and knowing what can be used in certain services is huge in our line of work. Plus retail is a big part of many salons so understanding what you are selling or promoting makes the job that much easier.”
“A strength of mine comes from having years of experience doing clipper cuts in some form or another, so that’s what I’d consider my strong suit leaving school. Many of my classmates were even curious how I’d do them, and knowing it’s tough to get the hang of I would give pointers when they needed it. I also feel I picked up braiding pretty easily and I want to also take off and excel in that service as well.”
“I’m different than others around me and I feel bold for being the first male in a school that started out with nothing but women. That alone makes me unique in this setting. For the most part my aspirations are to learn and teach, I love seeing my skills sharpen and being able to turn around and pass them on to help others. I’m also detail oriented when it comes to my clients, and I treat everyone with respect. I am patient and make sure my full attention is focused on the client I have in my chair at that given moment. All in all, at the end of the day I want my clients to have that feeling of joy before leaving my chair.”
The Next Step
As Israel finishes the last of his hours with Evergreen, we asked him what’s next? “Initially I want to start working in a salon that helps build my skills and timing. All while I expand my knowledge by continuing my education along the way.
Maybe teach some day down the road so I can turn around and share what I know and what I can offer to the future professionals looking into the beauty industry,” says Israel.
“But until that day comes, I leave advice for those to follow… Ask questions and don’t be afraid to fail because in reality you learn from those mistakes most, which will sharpen your craft all the more. It’s doesn’t show up anywhere how many times you may have failed, but the amount of success you’ve learned from those failure shows when they need to,” offered Israel.
Mr. Israel Suarez graduated this August, 2019. And if you are interested in continuing to follow Israel throughout his career, you can check him out on Instagram: @izhairdesign . Congrats Israel!
