Hair Design Student Success Story: Tamara Marshall

About Tamara

Hair Design was always in the cards for Tamara, it was just a matter of when. “I have [known] that I wanted to be a stylist since I was 5 years old. My mother did hair[,] so I picked it up from her. Due to a lot of unexpected twist and turns I had to put Cosmetology school on hold. When I thought I had the chance to go back to school, I lost my Mom so again school was placed on hold. In 2015 I became permanently disabled and had nothing more to do and nothing but time on my hands.”

Even with the obstacles Tamara faced, she never gave up hope or her passion. Tamara was determined to not let life pass her by, so she took action. “I took time off to rest but at the beginning of this year (2017) I needed something to do[,] so one phone call and [a] prayer changed it all. I logged online, looked up a school and Evergreen stood out the most. I filled out the pre-registration form and the rest is history.”

Many students often encounter obstacles that lead them to an important decision in their lives. Do I continue down this path or do I alter my route and follow my dreams? Tamara choose to follow her dreams. “It was fate, I prayed and Evergreen stood out [to] me, it was something about the name that I was drawn too and it has been the best decision ever made! EVERGREEN ROCKS!”

The Evergreen Experience

We asked Tamara some of her favorite things about the hair design program, what she specializes in and what in particular has helped her the most through her Evergreen journey.

“Oh wow[,] I can’t just say one thing. I love it all but if I had to choose it would be thermals and updo’s, I love doing thermals and I love doing updo’s.”

“Thermals, updo’s, weaving and braiding and not in any particular order. I love straightening hair, I love how shiny and silky it looks when it’s done. I love updo’s because you can be so creative with them. Weaves can help you go from long hair to short or short hair to long. Braiding is therapy, I come up with most of my ideas when I am braiding.”

“The chemistry behind coloring. Coloring is more complex than I thought. In the beginning I thought you just had some color [in] a bowl and that’s it[.] I didn’t know you had to add developer, volume or [even] about toning at all.”

What sets Tamara apart from the other stylist in the industry? After scrolling Tamara’s feeds online, it wasn’t a surprise when I got her response. ” Most stylists only style, just like braiders only braid, I do both. A client can have the best of both worlds with me as their stylist.” With this mentality Tamara will make a wake in the industry and I can’t wait to see where it leads her next.

The Next Step

Evergreen is always encouraging its students to look long term. We know the key to success is having a clear goal, thanks to our Nuts and Bolts Business program. The more clear the goal, the easier it will be to obtain and to reflect on. What’s that big picture look like for Tamara? “I am interested in the Instructors training course and I also would like to own my own salon.”

If Tamara could give advise to those who follow in the halls of Evergreens, it would be: “Be confident and let nothing hold you back. Let your creativeness and work speak for you. ALWAYS be professional and never forget you are you’re own walking billboard.” I look forward to seeing Tamara’s impact on our industry she has worked so hard to be apart of.  Evergreen wishes you the best of luck as you take these next steps into your journey of being a future successful salon owner.Tamara graduates in August 2018, so you still have time to book with her in our student salon!
