Here are some FAQs as a guide before scheduling your consultation and first appointment:
What is laser hair removal? If you’re not happy with shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal may be an option. Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures in the U.S. It beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles.
Background: Pigment in the follicles absorb the light. That destroys the hair. Lasers are useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas. Benefits of laser hair removal include: Precision. Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. Speed. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.
Laser Hair Removal is not permanent hair removal, but permanent hair reduction. You will see significant hair reduction, and in some individuals, you won’t see it for years. Some individuals do need to come back for maintenance every few years.
What is IPL? The primary goal of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is to make the skin tone or color more even. One of the signs of aging is irregular brown and sometimes red discoloration of the skin. These changes are due to sun damage, and are the usual reason women begin to wear foundation type makeup.
3 Benefits for IPL:
- It evens out skin color.
- It brightens the skin and give it a youthful glow.
- It adds back small amounts of collagen near the surface of the skin to give a slight improvement in texture.
The light energy in IPL is absorbed by the colors that we don’t like, causing the generation of heat that damages or destroys the structure that holds the color – the sun spot or dilated blood vessel. The body sees the structure as damaged and takes it away. This leaves the skin tone more even and homogeneous.
In addition, IPL brightens the skin and gives it a youthful glow. This is a remarkably consistent result of IPL. For many patients, this alone makes IPL worth the effort.
Another, but more subtle goal of IPL, is to add small amounts of collagen back into the skin near its surface. This will not reduce wrinkles, but it does have an effect on the texture of the skin.
Can everyone receive a clinical service?
No, not everyone qualifies. Sometimes it because your hair lacks pigment for laser hair removal, or your skin type isn’t a good match for the treatment. If you’ve been out in the sun for extended periods of time, you may also not be a good candidate.
How do I prepare for laser hair removal?
The most important thing to know is the area should not be wax or tweeze the area to be treated for six weeks prior to the treatment because hair must be in the follicle in order for the treatment to be effective. You can and should shave the area, however, make sure to shave the area to be treated on the day of your hair removal session because this will make it easier for the laser to locate hair follicles.
What can’t I do after the treatments?
After your treatments, it is important to stay out of the sun for at least two weeks. After that, please make sure to use sunscreen of at least SPF 30. If you go out in the sun without sunscreen, you may experience skin discoloration. Also avoid abrasive skin treatments because they can cause skin inflammation toward any other service here at the college.
