There’s a vast number of cosmetology programs for all types of professions in the beauty industry. In this review, we will demystify what aspiring students will learn in cosmetology school, what they can potentially specialize in, and what to expect on the path to earning a cosmetology license.

What are Traditional Cosmetology Course Curriculums?

Cosmetology covers topics including hair styling, hair cutting, color theory, makeup application, basic facials, and more! The idea of becoming a licensed cosmetologist may sound daunting. Still, there are things would-be students can do to become more versed with the glossary of cosmetology-related terms to feel better aligned with the study of beauty before they start school.

In beauty school, cosmetology students will become quickly oriented with terms, techniques, and the cosmetology curriculum. Some students may enter school with a diverse, wide range of beauty interests. Having a passion for beauty in various specializations is not uncommon. While in school, educators will help guide students in determining where their passion and skills are most suited so that students can decide whether or not they want to become hair stylists, makeup artists, or nail care beauty professionals.

Some cosmetology programs cater to each student’s schedule and learning abilities. With more and more courses offering digital access to the course material, students can revisit the material they learned in class anytime.

A traditional cosmetology program focuses on five main areas:

  • Hair
  • Nails
  • Skin
  • Makeup Application
  • Business Operations

What Hair Coloring Techniques Will Students Learn?

In a cosmetology course, students will learn the fundamental techniques about hair color and coloring techniques, from achieving vibrant and otherworldly hues to more natural and timeless tones. Educators will demonstrate advanced coloring skills, like ombre and balayage, how different hair textures fair under relatively hair-compromising techniques, and how often stylists can safely color hair.

In the classrooms, educators provide students with hands-on training in formulating colors mixtures that range from warm honey blonde to cool and classic platinum. They’ll explore hair coloring and the range of browns and reds, from chestnut, chocolate, cherry, cinnamon, other rich, warm colors.

Haircuts and Styling

Cutting hair that flatters the face shape and looks good on various hair textures is among the most critical skills in cosmetology. Having the ability and skills to give a good haircut and styling can make a significant difference in whether an aspiring professional cosmetologist can become successful in their career. Throughout the program, each individual will receive hands-on experience with real clients at a student salon where solely students and instructors provide services. What type of cuts and styles will you be learning in a cosmetology course? Mostly classic cuts, styles that are currently in demand, and up-and-coming trends.

Blunt cutting is a classic, and regularly used technique students will learn. Unlike layered cuts––another classic style students should learn to master––blunt cunt achieves a clean and straight look that can work on virtually any hair type. Point cutting is a more useful technique if you want to blend hair. Stylists using scissors or shears accomplish blunt cuts that define the hair’s edge. Learn to style hair, equipped with the knowledge to achieve beautiful results.

Finally, students will learn point cutting, reverse point cutting, and hair weight reduction. Reverse point cutting adds texture, volume, and a tapered look, while weight reduction can add texture but makes the hair appear thinner.

Manicures, Nail Art & Pedicures

Nail technicians think about manicures, nail color, and nail art daily. They spent many training hours in school practicing on their fellow students and learning to become swift and efficient to move a new client into their seat. Out of the various cosmetology jobs, nail techs are one of the few that are usually sitting all day.

While learning about nail styles, beauty school students will delve into applying acrylic tips, classic and modern French manicures, and many other classic and trendy nail-related beauty skills, including experimenting with nail art. While learning the art of doing nails, whether manicures or pedicures, it is crucial to invest time in learning about maintaining a sanitary and safe station at all times.

Facials, Massages & Makeup Artistry

While cosmetology students will learn about skin anatomy and how to administer basic facials and massages, students enrolled in the esthetics program will examine skin analysis and explore how each face has unique traits and how to tailor skincare treatment to target each individual’s problem areas and thus making the appearance of the skin more radiant.

While facials and massages may seem like a one-size-fits-all solution, a cosmetologist or esthetician can help clients determine which ingredients and skin care treatments they need to repair and improve their skin.

Understanding skin types can also aid beauty students looking to explore makeup artistry. An event makeup artist will know when to choose a matte foundation for oily skin and a more hydrating foundation for dry or combination skin. Of course, learning insider makeup application tips has advantages for all cosmetology students even for those who aren’t striving to be professional makeup artists. Students studying makeup artistry will experiment withl everyday wear and the more experimental and artistic costume makeup.

Education Requirements, Business Operations & Additional Courses

By the end of the course curriculum, students will meet all of their education requirements. With the fast-paced salon environment, learning the ins and outs of the business is essential, especially if students plan to launch their own brand or salon business after graduation.

Students will learn to navigate all the intricacies of operating a salon business, from budgeting, inventory, beauty product purchases, customer care, getting leads, and retaining clients.

Additional coursework may be required for those desiring to become a beauty instructor.
