The Demand for Medical Estheticians

A medical esthetician is a professional who is trained to provide skincare treatments to the face and body in order to help them look more beautiful. Medical estheticians may also perform specialized skin treatments, select and apply cosmetic products, and educate patients on how to properly care for their skin. The short answer is that medical estheticians have a greater focus on the clinic environment than traditional estheticians. Medical estheticians can hold jobs in plastic surgeon’s offices, oncology practices and dermatologist’s offices instead of only salons or spas.

The Growing Demand for Medical Estheticians

Now can be a great time to become a medical esthetician. The number of jobs in this field is increasing faster than the national average for all other jobs. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (2018), the number of jobs available for estheticians is expected to increase by 38% within the next 10 years. The rising demand for skin care treatments is one of the many things fueling job growth in this field.

How to Become a Medical Esthetician

To begin your education as a medical esthetician, the first thing you need is your GED or high school diploma. Even though a college degree is not always required to enter an esthetician program, some people choose to take courses in biology and anatomy before they go to school as an added benefit. Additionally, many students already have experience in the medical field before they apply to esthetician school, which can be helpful.

Duration of the Course

It is important to note that education requirements can vary from program to program. Students can usually expect to complete between 600 to 1,200 hours of training in an esthetician program. Each state sets regulations on how long estheticians programs need to be, so it can

Full-time students can typically complete their program in about nine months.  During esthetician school, students learn how to perform procedures such as exfoliations, photo light facials and medical peels. They are also taught how to apply makeup to cover up burns and other skin trauma. Students are required to demonstrate their skills in a clinical setting before they graduate.

All estheticians are required to be licensed before they can legally practice. Licensure requirements can vary from state to state, but most states require that one pass a written and practical examination.

How Much Do Medical Estheticians Make Per Year?

Medical estheticians can typically make around $15.90 per hour, or $32,000 per year. Years of experience is one of the many factors that affect the pay for medical estheticians, so seasoned medical estheticians can make significantly more. Additionally, the type of facility that one works in is another factor that affects salary. The highest-paid estheticians are typically the ones who work in doctor’s offices.
