Work with a Mentor

Working with a mentor is an excellent way to get hands-on experience. It also gives you the opportunity to get answers to all of your beauty-related questions, as you think of them.

Chances are that you already know someone who is willing to mentor you or is aware of someone else who is in the position to do so. Remember, everyone was new once and usually gets satisfaction out of “paying it forward.”

Take Specialized Classes

There is always the option to take specialized classes. If you can’t find them in your immediate area, look for online classes. Many of them can be taken “on demand,” which is very convenient when you happen to have a hectic schedule.

More and more makeup artists are putting up channels on YouTube. This is another possibility to consider, especially if you are looking for no-cost instruction.

Practice to Improve Makeup Skills

Frequent practice is essential, in this industry. If you don’t think you have time to practice, you need to FIND the time. Friends and family members will, no doubt, be happy to serve as models. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love a free makeover?

Go one step further and make a night of it. Invite a few friends, serve drinks and snacks and give everyone a mini makeover.

Use Professional Tools

At first, you may not think that using professional tools helps improve your skills. But, in reality, it does.

When you’re purchasing brushes and other required tools, don’t opt for mediocre. As the saying goes, “you get what you pay for.”

If your budget is tight, get creative. Clean out the attic, sell things on Craigslist or take on a part-time job, if your schedule allows.

You’ll probably be surprised by how fast you can make the extra money needed to buy quality equipment.

As you can see, these are all wonderful ways that you can improve your makeup skills. Of course, it won’t happen overnight. With due diligence and dedication, you should notice an improvement quite quickly.

Remember, this is a profession where hands-on experience is everything. The longer you work at it, the easier it will become.
