5 Must Have Halloween Makeup Tips
Halloween is almost upon us, which means it’s time to start planning our costumes and makeup for the big day! We’ve put together five essential Halloween makeup tips for getting your look right without splashing out on expensive costume makeup. With these pointers, you can get the look you desire at home and be a showstopper on Halloween!
1. Refine The Base Layer
Before anything else, you need start with a good base. This will help your makeup go on smoothly and look great all night. Many people invest in expensive bases that you can buy from Halloween stores, but you could achieve the same effect by using a standard foundation. After all, nobody is going to see it if you’re going to be adding another color on top, such as white, green or red. If you’re going for white face paint, you’ll want to pick a foundation that’s a few shades lighter than what you’d usually wear. You can tint the foundation by mixing it with eyeshadow. Use a brush or sponge so your coverage looks even and consistent.
2. Perfect The Outline
Before you start applying your colors, it’s a good idea to plan the outline with eyeliner or colored pencils. Do this first before you decide to fill anything in, since this way you can always change your mind and make sure it works as well as you think it will. Eyeliners are usually better than pencils for this job because they won’t smudge as easily. Once you’ve got the perfect outline drawn, you’re ready to start making you look pop!
3. Dramatize The Eyes
The key to a good costume is getting the eyes right, so focus more of your energy on creating dramatic eyes that really stand out. Zombies or vampires could look stunning with some colored contacts, or if you’re going for a less gruesome look, you could try some crystals and bright colored eyeshadow.Anything goes! You could even try a spooky look by drawing cobwebs around the eyes, , which would be perfect for an Elvira or witch costume. Dark, sunken eyes are also a great way to give your vampire makeup a realistic touch. Regardless of the costume you’re preparing for, nailing the eyes can bring the entire look together!
4. Use Special Effects Makeup
Special effects makeup is the art of creating realistic blood and gore effects, and it’s the perfect way to tie together an impressive Halloween costume. Did you know you can make your own non-toxic fake blood? This is especially a good idea for kids who want to use blood around their mouth and eyes. It’s simple, you just need to follow these easy steps:
- Mix one part water with three parts corn syrup.
- Gradually add in red food coloring to get the look you desire.
- Add chocolate syrup to make it darker.
Just like that, you have fake blood you can use with your costume that is completely non-toxic, and even edible! It’s a simple and safe way to bring your entire costume together. You can even give yourself fake vampire bites, axe wounds, or putrefied flesh on other areas of your body too. Use your imagination and go wild!
5. Set Your Makeup For Success
The last pointer is a simple one, but it’s one of the most important: set your makeup with some translucent powder or baby powder so it stays in place all night long. Trick or treating can be a workout and Halloween parties can be a shout, so make sure your face won’t wear out! A simple powder is all you really need to keep your look as ghastly as possible.
