Pros and Cons of a Cosmetology Career
Becoming a cosmetologist can be a great career option for anyone that likes to work with people and enjoys making someone feel beautiful. While there are clear advantages to becoming a cosmetologist, there are also some disadvantages that someone needs to be aware of as well before they start to pursue a cosmetology career.
Below are some of the pros and cons of being a cosmetologist.
Pros
Financially Rewarding
One of the pros of becoming a cosmetologist is that it can be both financially and emotionally rewarding. Cosmetologists who have developed a large client list and work at a popular salon can make a lot of money. Furthermore, they often have the flexibility to work the hours that they want, which can create a great work/life balance. A cosmetologist spends all their time helping clients look better which makes them more confident and helps them leave satisfied, which can make the job emotionally rewarding as well.
Entrepreneurial Options
Another pro of being a cosmetologist is that it could be a great way to start your own business. Cosmetologists that have been working in the field for a few years, and have developed a large client list, may actually be better off financially by starting their own salon. This is one of the few fields where someone with some skill and a little business sense could easily open up their own practice and start earning enough money to support themselves.
Cons
It Takes Time to Get Started
One of the cons of being a cosmetologist is that it can take a while before they start earning a decent salary. While a cosmetologist can earn a lot of money in their career, most of them don’t start earning sizable incomes until they have been working for at least a few years. It takes some time for a new cosmetologist to build up a client list, and until that happens they depend on referrals and walk-ins into the salon. However, cosmetologists that are good with clients will quickly develop a sizable list of dedicated customers.
It Can Be a Challenge
While there are a lot of positives to being a cosmetologist, one of the things that shouldn’t be underestimated is how challenging it can be at times. Cosmetologists, especially when they are new to the industry, have to work very long days after work and sometimes seven days a week for little money. Furthermore they will be dealing with customers who demand very high quality services, which can be very frustrating. However, once you have accepted the challenges of the job, it can be very rewarding.

My wife wants to be her own boss. She wants to be with our kids more often than not but also wants to work and feel empowered. You said that she can start her own business with a cosmetology license so maybe that is something she’ll be interested in.

It’s awesome that you talked about how a cosmetology career comes with financial benefits. Recently, my sister mentioned she’s thinking of pursuing a beautician course. My sister wants to grow professionally, so I’ll be sure to share this article with her. Thanks for the information on a career in beauty and its benefits.https://www.mitsusatohairacademy.com/esthetics
I am looking into cosmetology school and i was wondering if it is worth it when your a mom. Pretty much would i be able to make enough to support my son, and i and everything that we need. So pretty much is it a good job to have with a kid??
there are positives and negatives to it but once you begin you will have less time because you’re still learning and practicing but once you get more clients, you can become your own boss (takes plenty of time and work but it is completely worth it) then you can make your own hours and have plenty of time with your children.
My sister-in-law is 23 with two kids and is divorced she loves the income and the people she works with no matter how busy she is with her career she always has time with her kids.
I’m only 13 and I’m looking forward to become a cosmetologist.
That is exciting Sophia! What state are you in? In Washington State, you need to be 17 years old to take your exam, but it may be different for your state 🙂
The past comments were from a while back. I’ve wanted to be a cosmetologist since I was 7 yrs. old. I had no idea Evergreen existed! I’m now interested in attending.
