Cometology Student Success Story: Seanna Wisneski

With a second chance at a better life for this young lady, Ms. Seanna took it and ran with it. Not everyone has the courage to stop in their tracks and give up all that they have for the chance for a different life, but Seanna did and look at her now!

About Seanna

“I never really saw myself doing hair. It’s always something I’ve loved doing, but I didn’t think I could have a serious career doing it. I love everything about it: the chemistry, the details, the connections you make with people. Now I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

As Seanna’s passion grows in the industry lets take a look into where it all started. “I was actually bartending before I started school. I was working two jobs to support myself and my daughter, Eleanor. I’m from Michigan originally, and I just moved to Washington about 3 months ago. I was offered help going back to school, and even though it involved moving across the country, I couldn’t pass it up. It was an opportunity to make my life better for myself and Eleanor. It’s a huge life change, but sometimes that’s just what you need.” What an opportunity! Sometimes life isn’t always what we think it will be but being a mom and creating a better life for her daughter was a top priority for Seanna. Now Seanna’s daughter; Eleanor, will grow up watching her mom’s success and passion for this industry. Knowing, where there is passion and motivation there will be success and no regrets.

The Evergreen Experience

“I chose Evergreen because of how much everyone seems to love being here. About two weeks after I moved here, I took a tour and didn’t even consider any other school. I felt like I belonged here.” It’s amazing to hear that the culture Evergreen prides itself on, is felt the moment you walk through the doors!

We asked Seanna what are her specialties and parts of her curriculum that she has enjoyed most so far in school, and she shared:

“I love color because it brings out the artist in me. I used to paint a lot, but I haven’t had much time to do it since becoming a mom. Color is a way to express myself with hair as the canvas, and it’s truly open for creativity. My specialties would have to be clipper cuts and braiding. I love the detail involved with clippers, and I just get really in the zone when they’re in my hand. As for braiding, that’s been a recent development. I made it a point to conquer all the braids before moving out onto the salon floor, and I’m proud to say I did it.” Seanna has that creative artistic side to her, which explains the talent she creates on the salon floor. With the remainder of the year to refine her artistic skills, I can only imagine what fun and creative looks Seanna will recreate for her clientele.

Not every assignment is hands on in this industry, there’s a lot of knowledge of the products and their functions that cosmetologist will have to learn along the way. “I enjoyed product knowledge in Phase 1. It really helped me become an expert on the right products to use for each and every person that sits in my chair. Evergreen really wants you to be successful and it definitely shows.”

Now since Seanna is on the floor taking clients we asked her why they’d book with her and her reply was, “Clients should book with me because I truly strive to be the best I can be in everything. I’m open to criticism; it only helps me get better. I believe anyone can always stand to learn more no matter how experienced you are.” That statement alone will keep Seanna moving in the direction of growth. Evergreen often says, ‘If you stop learning, your dying’ and welcomes feedback at every turn, just for that reason alone.

“I’ve truly lived through it all and so has my hair. There is nothing I haven’t done to it, and I think that personal experience is really helpful in both school and relating to clients; I’ve had every color under the sun, long hair, I’ve shaved my head, hair ruined beyond repair. I think it helps give a different perspective if someone has actually lived through it versus just learning/hearing about it. Present me with a problem, and I have a solution because I’ve faced a similar one myself.” Being able to relate to the clients on a level of experience is important and will be a great tool for Ms. Seanna to utilize in the industry. Seanna will find her clients trust her on a whole new level with the relatable information she can share with them.

The Next Step

Where to next Seanna? “I currently work at Ulta and the salon manager wants me when I graduate. I’ve looked into Rudy’s a little bit because I love the inclusive vibe they put out. I haven’t really solidified anything yet, though. A lot can change in a year.”

Seanna leaves some advice for fellow students as them tread the halls on their first days of school. “Advice? It gets better. I probably cried once a week in Phase 1, and I almost quit twice; it’s intense, it’s draining, it seems never-ending. My daughter is the only thing that kept me going. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone is here to help you succeed. ”

Seanna is set to graduate in February 2019 and what better way to support her other than to come and get a service done from her at our Bellevue campus!
