Kyah knew from an early age she wanted to pursue her dream in Cosmetology. Not wasting anytime after high school, she made her way into the exciting industry. “I chose Cosmetology to help people feel good about themselves and while doing so, I get to be creative. It has always been my top choice in careers, and since I’ve also wanted to own my own business it’s a way to achieve both. Before I enrolled into beauty school I was in Sedro-Woolley High School and Skagit Valley College. I went to Skagit Valley College (running start) to get my graduation requirements done faster. I’ve always planned to start Cosmetology as soon as possible after graduating high school this past year. When I found out Evergreen was opening in Mount Vernon I jumped on the opportunity, with it close to home I felt it was meant to be,” shares Ms. Kyah.

Choosing a school can be overwhelming and intimidating. When asked why Kyah decided to go with Evergreen she explained: “I chose Evergreen Beauty College because I felt very welcomed and the positivity as soon as I took my interview. Being very nervous for my interview, Jayna, the admissions counselor was very nice which helped calm my nerves down after I sat and talked for a little while with her. She was very informative when it came to helping me understand the program and cost. Anytime she was unsure of anything she’d leave the room to verify I was getting the correct information, which helped me feel that I’d be supported well during my time in school.”

Since starting with Evergreen Ms. Kyah shares what she loves doing the most and what she feels her strengths are thus far. “I love to do up dos. I would like to get into wedding parties and doing hair for dances on weekends when I’m away from the salon eventually. I also love fashion colors because there is endless possibilities and creativity by blending different colors together and seeing how it will turn out. Its a services that really makes me happy. I feel most comfortable doing haircuts so far  because I understand the steps to them and I finally understand the difference with layers and graduation. I’ve even learned that using a feather razor is really effective when doing layers, which makes them easy.”

In between theory and services future professionals keep busy by staying focused on refining skills and timing. “I find that the bingo sheets are the most helpful because it helps me keep up on my credits and when I have nothing to do I can choose something off the sheet such as perform a haircut of choice or wrapping a perm,” adds Kyah.

“What sets me apart from other stylist is that I am willing to try anything new, if it’s doable. I like to make clients feel like I’m taking good care of their hair and not rushing or have my mind elsewhere. I always make sure to inform my clients what products I’m putting in their hair and why I chose it for them in the first place.” When asked why clients may chose to book with her Kyah shares: “I will always give my honest opinion, I will be friendly and upbeat no matter the day, and I’ll offer to add enhancment services to make your final look gorgeous!”

Still having about 8 months to go in her program Ms. Kyah already has bright plans for her future. “I plan to gain people skills and practice more in a busy salon close to home. Then I’d like to work at my family friends salon for a few years while I save up to build my own salon. During that time, I plan on taking some side training classes so I can keep up with trends!”

“My advice for anyone entering this program would be to try to get assignments and tasks done early! Always come in positive and ready to learn. Help others and welcome all!” Kyah shares as she continues her journey with Evergreen.

Ms. Kyah Lamb is set to graduate August of 2020. And if you are interested in continuing to follow Kyah throughout the rest of her program, you can check her out on Instagram:@kyahs.beauty.portfolio. Congrats Kyah! Evergreen looks forward to watching you blossom in this industry.
