Cosmetology Student Success Story: Sarah Blair

What makes you happy? Is it your job? I get to share the success of Ms. Sarah Blair and one thing that makes her happy. Sarah has been working her skills since she enrolled at our Renton campus, and I believe when you love doing what your doing that natural success follows suite.

About Sarah

Getting to meet people that genuinely love making others’ feel beautiful is a reassurance they are in the right industry. “It’s the future I’ve always wanted. I’ve currently been working on retail, and receptionist type of work, as well as going to school for business, but it just doesn’t make me happy like the beauty industry does. Cosmetology is my passion. I love helping people see their beauty, ” comments Sarah. With passion behind her words you can tell Sarah’s loves what she does, and that in itself is key for success. A job vs. career? They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Getting to make an individual feel their worth and beauty is a trade Sarah will be able to do for the rest of her career!

Having her pick of beauty schools, we asked Sarah why she chose Evergreen and her reply was, “Honestly, it was the google reviews! I did so much research I thought [my] hands would fall off. And the reviews on Evergreen shine so strong, reflecting that amazing program and staff, and my first tour just felt like home. This isn’t just school, it’s family.”

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting her Evergreen journey Sarah shares some of her highlights from her program this far along with what makes her unique to the clients coming in.

“What I like most [so far] would have to be haircutting. Whether it’s men’s or women’s, I love being able to take what I have learned and implement that in a creative cut for someone. My strengths are definitely cutting. More specially women’s cuts. I [also] really enjoy color, [as] I am great with that as well. There’s always room for improvement in everything I do, I just feel more confident with cutting,” said Sarah.

“I honestly think our workbook has been the most helpful [in school]. It forces you to read the textbook thoroughly and then repetitively write things down and fill in blanks. It’s visual-and that’s how I learn best, and as I said previously, it’s repetitive,” Sarah adds.

Sarah shares what sets herself apart for other stylist, “I think what sets me apart is that I’m extremely ambitious. Now I’m not saying the other students aren’t, but I just mean that I’m not afraid to step up and take risks, and make things happen. If you show me a picture of what you want done, I will not stop until we get as close to what you’re looking for as possible. (Within reason of course).” Many clients will appreciate that leadership quality Sarah speaks of. There are times clients walk in with a picture that can be a little nerve wrecking but Sarah embraces the challenge with keeping the integrity of the hair she’s working on. “I will always deliver above and beyond your expectations. I am creative, fun and a great listener too! I put %110 effort into every single thing I do, and it is my number one goal to never have a client leave my chair without feeling amazing!”

The Next Step

“I am looking forward to building my clientele in a salon/barbershop until I can eventually begin my own business, traveling in my mobile salon,” shared Sarah. That’s super exciting. To be able to go to the clients will make Sarah a desirable professional. The clientele for ‘hair parties’ or business events could be endless for Sarah down the road. Another way to catering to the clientele needs will set Sarah apart from the stylist next to her, that’s for sure.

Sarah left advice for future students to come, “My advice would be to go for it. You can’t succeed unless you fail first and this school is all about [turning] a negative into a positive. There’s also so many options here, you can pick and chose from different programs all centered in the beauty industry, do your research and find out what you love most!” Choosing a school shouldn’t be on a whim, go in, and interview them. Just as much as they are interviewing you. It is your career, and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Have fun and put all that you can into it, and I promise you will get out of it what you put in, just like Sarah has.
