Cosmetology Student Succuess Story: Amber Hiatt

Today I get to share our first future professional to be recognized for all her hard work building her business from our Yakima campus. Congratulations Ms. Amber Hiatt!

About Amber Hiatt

“I chose to become a Cosmetologist for several reasons. I have always loved doing hair. I would style my friends hair for formal dances in High School often. Hair has been something I have always had a knack for. However, the main reason I started Cosmetology was for my students. I serve as a Youth Leader at my church, so I wanted a flexible work schedule so I can continue to be present in their lives. I want to go to camp, go to their games and concerts, and attend whatever else they are involved in. Then of course, once I have kids, be involved in their school things also”, shares Amber. The beauty of this industry allows the flexibility Amber is looking for as she gives back to the youth in her area.

“I chose Evergreen because of the reviews. At first I checked the reviews that are on Evergreen’s website, and found that they were all high marks. I thought this was really cool, but my first thought was, “but they can choose whatever they want to put on their website.” So I looked at more reviews on Google, and all of the comments echoed the website. I loved hearing about the friendly atmosphere, and about how the Trieu family made you feel a part of the Trieu family,” states Amber.

  The Evergreen Experience

Amber shares some highlights of her program, what has helped her, services she enjoys, along with areas of strengths:

“To me, the most helpful assignments have been learning about different shampoos & conditioners. I had just assumed all shampoo was the same, and that anything could work on anyone. Not true!”

“My mom actually just asked me this question several days ago. “What do you like most about your program?” It is hard to answer, because I enjoy it all. Although, I think cutting hair is what I like best, because I have seen the most growth in myself with that so far.”

“I think my strength is the ability to engage others in friendly conversation. I am not shy by any means, so when I get walk in clients, I am pretty good at getting them to converse. I love hearing about their lives, their hobbies, things like that.”

Amber shared what set her apart and why clients should seek her as a stylist: “When you’re in my chair, I want to give you more than a haircut or color. Yes, my goal is to make you feel great about your hair, but I want people to feel beautiful on the inside AND the outside. When people sit in my chair, I want them to know that they are important; they are smart; and that they have purpose. I believe outer appearances are nothing compared to how a person feels about who they are. The way I treat people sets me apart. My goal is to ensure that when people sit in my chair they don’t feel judged, and they feel they can talk to me about their lives.”

The Next Step

Amber has it planned out well ahead of her graduation date, ” I am hoping to extern at my salon ‘Onyx’, underneath my stylist Arlyne. From that externship, I would really love the opportunity to work there full time. If that doesn’t work, I would like to work with my Aunt at ‘Salon at Lakeside’.”

Amber shares advice for any future student looking to follow in the beauty school path here at Evergreen, “Work hard EVERY DAY! There will be really tough days, but keep working through them! You will have the most amazing classmates and teachers to keep pushing you and encouraging you to be your best! Also, ASK QUESTIONS! This is YOUR education. Get as much out of it as you can. Don’t be afraid to keep asking the same questions if you don’t understand things,” adds Amber.

Ms. Amber Hiatt is set to graduate next January 2019 and what better way to support her along her journey other than to come get a service done from her at our newest Yakima campus!
