Prior to beauty school and her enrollment into the Hair Design program, Ms. Shila was a caregiver. Looking for her calling, she shortly landed at Evergreen Beauty College. This has been a rollercoaster for Ms. Shila, but she’s been determine to make it work. “The main reason I chose to get into beauty school was because I love making people experience the beauty that they already have, and I wanted to be the one to help them show it off to the world. In 2018 I moved to Yakima from Oregon to live with my sister due to some significant things that had happened. While I got settled in I helped watch my niece so my sister could work. I was a caregiver for the state there, which I loved.

I love helping those that have any type of disability or personalities: physically disabilities, dementia, or even Alzheimer’s. Even with the love of helping others in this capacity, it was very tiring, and a demanding job; physically and mentally. So I decided to do something that I love, which brings me here today at Evergreen Beauty College. I really liked how Evergreen’s program worked, and what they had to offer. The hours they operate and how close to home the school is worked perfectly for me as well. I can see my future of becoming a better person, better mom, and role model for my daughter because this school also has great opportunities for personal and professional to growth,” shares Shila.

“What I like the most about the Hair Design program since starting is that I get to color hair and I get to learn new ways to do it all the time. hair cutting is interesting too and has a lot that goes into it, that most do not recognize. With so many different ways of making people experience their own beauty, in general in rewarding to me as I’m able to help them bring that out in themselves,” expressed Ms. Shila.

“As for the most helpful assignments I’ve had so far, it would be the hands on type. I am the type of person that needs to see it and then do it until I get it down the way it is supposed to be. When we had the anatomy and physiology portion of our course, we had to do a poster for each system we were learning about, and that was fun. I learned a lot during that activity,” Shila adds.

Ms. Shila tells us that she has so many amazing skills she can offer her clients. “My personality, and a listening ear is a huge portion my clients enjoy. Being someone who can listen and deliver hair needs that they are looking for and in a timely manner is how I operate with all of my clients. I’m very cautious about my hair cuts and color services I perform because those are two services that can be drastic, and I want to make sure my clients leave happy. Also, what makes me a little unique is that I’m the only person in my class that is a Hair Design student. My goal is to work my way to a full cosmetologist once I specialize in all things hair first.” With the new program launched in Washington State not too long ago the beauty industry recognizes a difference between Cosmetology and Hair Design. Hair Design specializing in Hair, while Cosmetology covers hair, skin and nails to a certain degree. This unique aspect allows anyone looking into this side of the industry to really choose what best fits long terms goals they may have.

Ms. Shila also has a goal she’s aiming for once she graduates, “My career plan is to ultimately work and build my clientele. The right clientele will bring a successful future in the beauty industry so that’ll be a focus,” Shila stated with a big smile on her face. Also wanting to open her own salon in the future so her family is well care for. “I want my daughter to be proud of her mother, and I want her dreams to come true as much as possible and by looking back at what I’ve been able to accomplish in life will help motivate her to chase those dreams!”

Ms. Shila wants to make sure incoming future professionals are aware that, “they should take this decision seriously but at the same time have fun and enjoy doing what you love. Never give up! Enjoy the journey and learn from any mistakes,” Shila said when we asked her for advice she could pass along.
