How to Get a Cosmetology License in Washington

Are you interested in getting a cosmetology license in Washington? If so, then you can potentially have a very rewarding career ahead of you. Below are the steps that you will need to take to get a cosmetology license in Washington:

How to Get a Cosmetology License in Washington

Before you apply for your cosmetology license, you will need to get the proper training. The state of Washington requires that you complete 1,600 hours of training before you get your license. You will need to enroll in an accredited cosmetology school in order to complete this training. The requirements needed to get into beauty school can vary, but most schools require that you have a high school diploma or GED and be at least 16 years old.

You also have the option of completing an apprenticeship program in cosmetology. If you decide to take this route, then you will need to complete 2,000 hours of training. The amount of time that it takes you to complete this training can vary greatly. You may be able to complete this training within one year if you attend full-time school. However, if you attend school part-time, then it may take you more than two years to complete this training.

Washington Cosmetology Licensing Exam

After you have graduated from cosmetology school, you will be able to take the licensing exam. There are two parts to the exam, a written exam and a performance exam. You must pass both parts in order to get your license. If you happen to fail one part, then you will need to take both parts of the exam over again.

You will be able to apply for your state license after you pass the exam. Your state license will be valid for two years, and it must be displayed in your working area at all times. You do not have to take continuing education courses to renew your license, but they are recommended. A fee is required to renew your license.
