Manicures, pedicures and nail extension are examples of some of the services that a nail technician provides. The prerequisites required to become a nail technician can vary from state to state. However, all states require that a person complete an accredited training program. People who are interested in completing a nail technician program must be at least 16 years old. They are also required to possess a GED or high school diploma.

Nail Technician Duties and Responsibilities

Nail technicians are required to clean, trim, file, shape, smooth and polish the nails of their clients. They are also required to soften the client’s cuticle and push it back. Nail technicians may apply artificial nails. Additionally, they have to observe the client’s nails closely so that they can make sure that there is no infectious disease present.

Nail technicians are required to keep their equipment and tools clean so that they can prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Nail technicians not only work with nails, but they also perform other duties around the salon. They accept payments, answer the phone and schedule appointments. Nail technicians also help the other people who work in a salon keep it neat and tidy. Therefore, they play a very important role in running a salon. People who are interested in becoming a nail technician are required to possess great customer service skills.

Working Environment

Nail technicians work in sanitary and clean environments.  The vast majority of nail technicians work in a salon, but they may also work in a resort or day spa. Most nail technicians work a standard 40 hour week, but they may also work longer than that.  It is also important to note that they may be required to work on the weekends and in the evenings.  Those are typically the times that the salon is usually the busiest.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs available for nail technicians is expected to increase by 19 percent with the next 10 years. That is a-lot faster than the national average for all other jobs in America. Therefore, job opportunities are expected to be great for new nail technicians. The average salary for a nail technician is around $22,040 per year.
