Requirements For Nail Technician Training

One of the most lucrative careers that you can have nowadays is in the field of cosmetology. Cosmetology is one of the fastest growing industries and it is projected that more and more people will be needed to fill certain job positions in the years to come. There are many career opportunities that you can choose in cosmetology and one of them is becoming a nail technician.

Who is a Nail Technician And What do They do?

Nail technology is a highly specialized field in cosmetology. People who are trained in this field have bright career opportunities ahead of them. Nail technicians are also known as manicurists or pedicurists. Their main task is to cut, clean, trim, file, and finally, to polish the fingernails and toe nails of their clients. Nail technicians are also required to be highly knowledgeable about the different nail treatments. In addition to that, they are responsible for educating their clients about proper nail care and hygiene. Most technicians find jobs in salons, spas, and nail spas. Others also end up doing freelance work as well.

What Are The Requirements For Nail Technician Training?

Becoming a nail technician will require rigorous education and training.

If you plan on undergoing nail technician training, you should make sure that you meet the following requirements.

Age Requirement

Different state boards have different age requirements for nail technicians but according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, you will need to be at least 16 years old to be able to undergo any sort of training program.

Educational Requirement

You need to have at least a high school degree or the equivalent to enroll in any nail technician school or any cosmetology school. Technicians are required to complete a certain level of education and training as mandated by the state. Different states have varying requirements so make sure you do your research well.

Most states however, would need you to finish at least 300 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on training from an accredited cosmetology school.

State Licensure Examination

Once you have completed the required training program, you will need to pass the state licensure examination called the National Nail Technology Exam given by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology.

You can ask your school to assist you with the documents and paperwork that you have to fulfill to take the exam. In addition to that, you will need to shell out for the licensing fee which will vary between $20 to $50 depending on which state you plan to practice.

The journey towards becoming a nail technician is going to be an exciting and challenging one. Once you are fully licensed you will now be able to practice different ways of treating the fingernails and toenails of your clients. In the near future you might also want to be certified in more specialized nail treatments like nail art. Remember that you will need to renew your license every year or every two years depending on the requirements of the state that you are working in.
