Life After Hair Design School: How To Start Applying for Jobs

After the training and passing your state exam, you have finally achieved your goal of becoming a professional hair stylist. The next step is to get hired to start earning money and helping clients look their best. If you have recently completed your cosmetology program and are now wondering what’s next, we have put together a few helpful answers to your most demanding questions.

What Type of Salon Do You Want To Work In?

That is the first question you should ask yourself before you start applying for hairstylist jobs. You can choose to go with either a franchise, a private salon, or even renting a booth or your own salon studio.

Franchises are abundant, and therefore they are usually the most accessible places for new hair stylists to apply for a job and get hired. These locations will usually pay their employees an hourly wage, which can be helpful when you are just getting started with your career.

Working in a private salon is another option to consider. The pay scales are different for private salons as well as the opportunity for promotion. Many customers will expect higher-quality results from a private salon, usually because they are charged more for cuts and styles than those charged at a franchise.

While it’s possible to get a job at a private salon as soon as you complete your beauty school program, you would have better luck applying after having had a few years of experience working for a franchise.

When you rent a booth inside a salon or renting a salon studio, you are working for yourself, and that can be a desirable option for anyone who always wanted to be their own boss. But you will need to have a solid client base already built up to ensure you can take care of rent and other necessary fees. With this option, you can usually set your own schedule. However, you may be limited based on your contact with the salon.

What To Do After Beauty School – Deciding on the Type of Salon

The first and most obvious thing you will need to do is look for salons currently hiring. Consider where you currently live and if you would be willing to relocate to have access to more job opportunities. You should also ask yourself how far you would be willing to commute.

If you are hoping to be hired by a franchise, you should check out their website or social media pages to see if they are hiring. However, if you are interested in applying for a job with a private salon or renting a booth, you can check out websites such as Craigslist for the most current listings.

Once you have decided on where you want to work and have found a few open positions to apply for, it is time to start working on your resume. Many times new beauticians who just completed their degree program may want to downplay their skills so their new employer doesn’t expect too much right away. But you should be proud of the skills you obtained while working so hard to complete beautician school. So be sure to add in all your current skills, because they are very important and valuable to the future of your career.

Once you have submitted several applications, you can expect to be contacted for an interview. A large portion of your job as a beautician is to interact with others and have excellent social skills. You can use your interview sessions as an opportunity to present yourself as a professional but also a social individual.
