Cosmetology Is Not For Everybody. Don’t Do It If You’re One of the Following

cosmetology careerIf you’re considering a cosmetology career, you’re not alone. Cosmetology is a field which is ever-growing, and it’s predicted to keep doing so.

It may seem easy to an outsider, or even a person who frequents salons and spas, to become a successful cosmetologist. But anyone who works in the field can tell you otherwise.

Cosmetology is a career path for which not everyone is cut out. So what would hinder a person from becoming a happy and thriving cosmetology career?

1) You’re not a “people person”

Let’s face it: You can’t be a miserable, unhappy or nasty person if you’re considering a cosmetology career. Like it or not, most people consider their hairstylist or nail technician as a therapist of sorts.

Just like a bartender, cosmetologists seem to encourage people to open up. Maybe it’s the feeling of intimacy that’s forged when someone is working on your hair, skin, nails, etc. Regardless of the reason why, a cosmetologist needs to be able to talk to people.

You have to be good at putting new clients at ease and have to be able to build a rapport. Particularly if you’re trying to create a relationship with clients to encourage them to come back for more.

After all, would you want to return to a cosmetologist who made you feel uncomfortable?

2) You’re not passionate about growth

The field of cosmetology is changing every day. New trends, techniques and products hit the market regularly and a successful cosmetologist has to stay on top of this. Still, if cosmetology is a true calling, that sort of continuing education won’t be construed as a chore but rather as a joy. Or something that keeps things fresh and interesting.

Staying abreast of new trends, always sharpening skills and abilities, should be looked at as a challenge. It’s not a punishment. If you’re not always interested in learning more and growing in your profession, a cosmetology career is not for you.

3) You’re not driven or self-motivated

Sure, many cosmetologists can secure jobs at salons or spas, but the work doesn’t stop once you get a job somewhere. You have to be willing to put yourself out there to grow your client base and build your book.

This takes dedication and a drive to succeed. It is what separates the truly successful cosmetologists, the ones for whom the sky’s the limit, from the ones who just get by and who are frustrated by their lack of steady work. If you’re not willing to go the extra mile to make a success of your cosmetology career, then you may do better to avoid this field.
