Cosmetology School 101: Costs, Syllabus, Career Paths

cosmetology schoolIf you have an interest in establishing a career in the field of beauty, why not explore what cosmetology has to offer. You can obtain the training, education and skills to become a cosmetologist by attending an accredited cosmetology school. You will learn skills in hair care, skin care, manicures, pedicures and more. As a professional in this field, you can establish a career in a hair salon, barber shop, spa or resort or open your own business.

Cosmetology School Program

Most states require that cosmetologists complete a training program before venturing into the beauty industry. Upon graduating from high school or receiving an equivalency diploma, you can enroll in a cosmetology school. Training programs may range from 1-2 years, depending on your school and the extent of education you desire.

At the end of your training program, you will need to pass a state exam for licensing. Licensing requirements differ from state to state; many states require that students pass separate exams for cosmetology specialties such as manicurist/pedicurist, skin care, hair care, etc. Once you’ve passed your exams and have obtained your license, you are ready to establish your career.

Syllabus and Skills

Cosmetology schools differ in their curriculum, training, mode of operation and costs. Before enrolling in a specific school, take time to review all aspects of the education they offer. Some programs are more comprehensive than others. Some schools offer specialty programs where you receive training in only one specific area such as hair care or only skin care, etc. Although specializing in specific areas has its advantages, a complete cosmetology program will provide you with more comprehensive training and skills to establish your career.

A comprehensive syllabus should include:

  • Hair cutting and design
  • Hair coloring
  • Hair removal
  • Perms & straighteners
  • Wigs and hair additions
  • Skin care, facials and face massage
  • Makeup application
  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Business and retail training

To establish a prosperous career in cosmetology, you will need more than mere technical skills. Cosmetologists need to be creative, communicative, good listeners, energetic and diligent in managing their time.

Career Paths

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for cosmetologists are expected to grow over the next 10 years, although the job outlook will vary depending on your specialty. Career opportunities range from makeup artists to hair stylists, nail technicians, estheticians, cosmetology instructors and more.

Cost of Training Programs

The cost of cosmetology training programs varies from school to school. Full programs will cost more than specialty training. Schools in metropolitan areas will cost more than those in rural areas. On average, full 1-2 year programs may cost anywhere between $10,000 and $20,000. This is substantially less than obtaining a 4-year university degree, which averages $20,000+ per year. Training in specialty programs such as only esthetics or only nail technology will cost much less.

Many accredited schools include beauty supplies, aprons and textbooks in their costs; you’ll need to inquire about this from each school directly. You can also inquire about financial aid such as scholarships, grants and payment plans from your prospective institution.
