Cosmetology Student Success Story: Jenny Cai

About Jenny Cai

Creativity and versatility lead Ms. Jenny, one of our Renton Campus Future Professionals to the beauty industry. “I graduated from the University of Washington in 2019 with a Communication degree and a minor in Diversity. I worked in office jobs and part time in food services. I was traveling right before quarantine and while in quarantine, I thought a lot about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to do something more creative and hands-on. My cousin is also a hairstylist and whenever I see her work, I feel so inspired and amazed at her transformations.” Jenny shares.

The beauty industry allows licensed professionals the opportunity to offer a variety of services that truly cater to their clients needs. Ms. Jenny shares why she chose Cosmetology, “I chose the Cosmetology program because I wanted to do hair, lash extensions and a little bit of everything related to beauty. I can offer a variety of services to my clients with a Cosmetology license. Also, with a broad range of services a cosmetologist gets to do, I would never feel restricted.” Ms. Jenny shares why she chose Evergreen Beauty College to get started towards her career goals. “I chose Evergreen Beauty College because I heard great reviews from my cousin. I wanted to go to a school that had a diverse community, close to home, safe community, and parking spaces. I did not want to spend a lot of time on transportation to and from school, which is why I chose the Renton campus specifically.”

Ms. Jenny Cai, a Cosmetology student at our Renton location, executed this vibrant color.

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the Cosmetology program with us Ms. Jenny has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far, and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist,

“In my program so far, I like color services, perms, and makeup. I have not had a lot of practice with the latter, but I have an interest in learning more about makeup product and application. I find color transformations fun and rewarding and rolling perms is tedious work but the final results always look amazing.”

“When we are on distance education learning, we would be assigned to write papers on haircutting videos. I find those most helpful because the video presents a visual picture of the angles and sectioning needed for a specific cut. Writing papers about these specific haircuts makes me dive deeper into learning and memorizing the techniques, instead of just watching it once and forgetting it.” Jenny shares.

“My strengths/specialty so far within my program are men’s haircuts, specifically fades, and foilyages. I have done more men’s haircuts than women’s so naturally, my technique has improved over time. I have not done too many foilyages within my program, but whenever I have this service, I study up the technique in hope to satisfy my client’s expectations.”

“I am a perfectionist. I want my work to reflect my skills, so I always try my best to achieve what the client wants. I am always finding new ways to improve my skills and I hope my clients can follow me on my journey to becoming a great stylist.”

Ms. Jenny Cai created this amazing cut for her client.

The Next Step

When it comes to plans after graduations Ms. Jenny shares her goals within the industry. “I plan on working at a salon for a year or two to gain more knowledge, experience, and clientele. My plan to rent a space at a salon or be a commission-based employee. After, I will branch off on my own and work for myself or work alongside with my cousin, who is also a hairstylist, in our own salon.” Ms. Jenny shares.

As Ms. Jenny approaches graduation she has been able to take her knowledge and skill set and elevate her to prepare for the real world of the beauty industry. “For incoming students, prepare to do a lot of independent work. No one is going to hold your hand and force you to learn or do something new. You have to take the initiative to ask for clarification and help. Also, keep a clear and focused vision of what you want out of beauty school. By coming to school every day, you will achieve them.”

Ms. Jenny is set to graduate this upcoming December. If you are interested in following Jenny throughout the rest of her program, you can check her out on Instagram: @jenc.artistry.  Congratulations Ms. Jenny! Keep that drive, and show this industry what hard work can do.
