Debunking Well-Known Beauty Myths

Beauty myths are very common. Many of these are harmless, but being influenced by bad beauty advice may be unhealthy. Here is a few of the most popular myths, along with whether there is any truth to them.

1. A woman should never wax during her period.

TRUE.  Changes in hormones prior to and through ovulation may make a woman more sensitive to pain. According to hair removal experts, the best time to wax is after menstruation.

2. A person should not rub wrists together after applying perfume.

TRUE.  Many fragrance experts believe that rubbing the wrists together can damage the oils that are contained in the fragrance. This will chemically alter the smell. It is best to leave it alone to air dry.

3. Shaving causes hair to grow in thicker.

FALSE.  Even though it may give that appearance, shaving only cuts the hair at the base, which leaves a blunt edge behind. This feels thick and coarse, but does not grow in any thicker.

4. A person should file the nails in one direction to prevent damage.

TRUE.  Professional manicurists recommend that a person should file the nails from the corners to the center in order to prevent splitting or breaking.

5. Antiperspirants contain aluminum which leads to breast cancer.

FALSE.  The Cancer Society Of Canada has stated that there is no proof that breast cancer is linked to antiperspirant use. All worries should be eliminated, as there is no solid evidence behind this claim.

6. Plucking the eyebrows will keep them from coming back.

TRUE.  After a prolonged period of plucking the eyebrows, the hair follicles may become very weak. It may take years, but may eventually lead the hair to stop growing back into the face.

These are just a few of the most well known beauty myths that have been circulating for years. Knowing which ones are true and which ones are not will help you make better decisions about your beauty regimen.  Forming positive beauty habits can positively affect other aspects of life.
