Esthetics Student Success Story: Alexis Adams

About Alexis Adams

Before enrolling in the Esthetics program at Evergreen Beauty College, Alexis was 6 months pregnant with twin boys and working as front desk and business manager at a hair salon she loved so much. She was at a transition period where she knew she needed to find a long-term career that would not only help support the two newest members of her family, but also allow her freedom and flexibility to be around for her children’s formative years. She knew that front desk and management was not going to allow that, but she wasn’t ready to leave the family she’d created at the salon. Her gears started turning and she spiraled down a research hole which led her back to Esthetics. The owner of her salon loved the idea of bringing back an Esthetician to the salon, so she took it as a sign and immediately set up a tour of Evergreen Beauty College.

When we asked Alexis why she chose the Esthetics program, she shared, “I’ve always loved playing with cosmetics and skin care, and I’ve particularly loved brow shaping and lashes. I spent my teenage years doing makeup for fun on myself and my friends. Some of my favorite memories are doing makeup on friends before school dances. I’d spent hours watching makeup tutorials on YouTube. It wasn’t until I was years into retail job after retail job that I learned about Estheticians and what is covered under their licensing. I was instantly intrigued.”

Alexis chose Evergreen Beauty College for many reasons: the campus’ proximity to her home, the positive reviews, and referrals from friends who attended EBC. But ultimately, Evergreen was the school that was able to offer a flexible schedule where she could still work, as well as spend time with her family.

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the Esthetics program with Evergreen Beauty College, Alexis has shared some highlights of what she enjoyed, what helped her while she was in school, and what sets her apart from other Estheticians. Alexis told us what she liked most about the Esthetics program is that she fell in love with everything to do with brows and lashes:  waxing, tinting, laminating, lifts and extensions – she loves it all!

When asked what assignments helped her the most while in school, she said the Skin Layer Project, in which students illustrate the layers of the skin and all the skin’s appendages on poster board and, the Diseases and Disorders Project, in which students create an illustrated booklet of common diseases and disorders of the skin. She also said, “I am a kinesthetic learner, so being able to see the examples in front of me really helped me retain the information and feel able to apply that knowledge to everyday scenarios.”

program. Alexis felt that she caught on to waxing much easier than she had expected to.

She picked it up quickly and gained more confidence every time she waxed someone. Seeing the instant gratification of a waxing service got her excited to keep doing more!

It’s always good practice to figure out what sets you apart from other Estheticians in the industry, and what you can offer your clients that will make them want to book with you over others. In response to this, Alexis told us, “My attention to detail and ability to communicate well with many different personalities is what sets me apart from other Estheticians. I am determined to have a clear understanding of what my clients’ expectations are and meet those expectations.”

The Next Step

Immediately after graduation, Alexis will be taking her state board exams. Once licensed, she plans to open a treatment room within Hair Ink Salon and Spa, which will be called Lucid Skin Studio. Alexis will continue to work front desk, while also building her clientele by offering facials, waxing, and lash and brow services. Eventually, she will phase out of working front desk and will work full-time in her treatment room. When that day comes, she’ll get her business license and work as an independent contractor. Alexis’ long-term goal is to expand her skills and become a brow and lash specialist, as well as add microblading to her service menu.

Alexis has some solid advice for incoming Esthetics students: “While I was in school, my life changed drastically. I lost a friend, as well as my grandpa, and nearly lost my mom. My babies turned into toddlers while I was here. Finances were tough; I had car troubles; and all of this was happening amidst a pandemic. I wanted to quit. I wanted to drop out and spend time with my kids, my husband, and my family. While my life felt like chaos around me, I was here. I showed up, I hustled. I was clawing my way to graduation. It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but, I would not change it for the world. My advice is to keep going, don’t give up, and take control of your future. It’s worth it.” Alexis shares.
