The first step in achieving punk hair styles is to understand the characteristics of this unique look.
Coloring
In general, many punks will dye their hair in colors that are bright and unnatural. Examples include bright pinks, electric blues, or deep greens. The dyes used tend to be extravagant and loud, and are certainly not natural. Sometimes the entire head of hair is dyed, other times just sections or highlights are dyed. Dye is also used to draw attention to a particular cut of hair. For example, if someone has a Mohawk he or she may dye the center longer cuts of hair, but leave the shorter sides their natural color.
A-Symmetrical Cuts
Along with color, there are cuts that express the punk style. Again, contrasts and unique styles are used over traditional styles. A-symmetrical cuts are common, such as Undercuts. This is when the upper part of the hair is grown out, but the bottom is shaved. Bangs might be cut at a sharp angle. One half of the head might be shaved, while the other is grown out. The idea is to achieve something unique and expressive.
The Mohawk
One of the most popular cuts is the Mohawk. This is when the hair is first grown out to a long length. Once it is long enough, the sides are shaved leaving the center strip of hair at this longer length. The Mohawk can then be styled with gel or wax.
The Flyaway
Another popular punk hairstyle is the Flyaway. This is when hair does not appear to have any style at all. Instead, there are combinations of spikes, braids, and accessories that seem random. This is iconic of old school punk rockers, and it expresses the rebellious nature of the movement.
