Cosmetology Student Success Story: Brianna Bass
Our Yakima campus was excited to award one of their cosmetology students this past month during an all school assembly for building her business. Ms. Brianna Bass is making steps in building her brand and connecting with her future clients and I can’t wait to share her story with you.
About Brianna Bass
“The main reason I chose cosmetology is simply for my love of hair. For most of my life I’ve had a passion for hair, I’ve been styling my own hair from the age of five because it’s something my mom didn’t really know how to do— I even remember getting asked at school who would do my hair and usually no one would believe that I had done it myself. At that point is when my love for hair started. I originally planned on enrolling into cosmetology school right after I graduated high school but I had to put that dream on hold for a bit because I became pregnant with my daughter. Prior to school, I worked at my moms daycare all the while still knowing hair was where my heart was. My mom has given me nothing but support along the way. I believe that my mom also becoming a mom at a young age; making sacrifices of her own to care for kids, played a role in her encouragement and support when it came time to make my decision to start down this road to beauty school. I’m extremely greatful of how supportive my family has been with me going back to school, without them, it wouldn’t have been possible. Being a young, single mom is a tough job already as it is, so going back to school wasn’t taken lightly. My daughter only motivates me to be the best version of myself, and she’s probably the biggest reason for me coming back to school. It’s not only about my future I have to think about now, it’s hers too, ” Brianna confides.
“As to why I chose Evergreen Beauty College to start my new journey? It was because of the atmosphere here in the school. Everyone was extremely welcoming the day I came in for my tour, that’s what sold me! For the most part, everyone gets along, and I love how supportive the staff is here, in and out of school.”
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the cosmetology program with us Ms. Brianna has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist:
“Since starting school I’ve learned many different things, such as hair cutting techniques, all over color, lightening/foils, perms and manicures. I would have to say my favorite is the barbering, which I would also consider to be my greatest strength so far. Getting that perfect blend is super satisfying to me which is why I’d like to say it’s one of my favorite aspect of school! As for what assignments, I believe the most helpful ones took place in the phase 1 classroom. That’s where you learn your basic cuts, chemical treatments, the basics of color theory, your sanitation, etc. It’s your foundation, something you’ll take with you everywhere you go, but perfect as time goes on. I think without that focus in phase 1, we couldn’t be as successful in what we do.”
“Something that sets me apart from other stylists is that I’m a pretty fast learner, and I’m always open to learning new techniques. On my free time I even like to watch tutorials on different techniques for colors and cuts to bring back to school to practice. Even though I’m a fast learner, I also happen to be a perfectionist. So, instead of rushing to get the job done, I take my time to ensure I have that perfect cut, blend, color or whatever else it may be so that my clients leaves happy and satisfied. My speed will come with practice. If I focus on doing the service right I figure the rest will eventually follow. Until my speed picks up, you should come in to try my amazing scalp massages I give during a shampoo! That’s a winner in it’s self and a good reason for someone to book with my over another cosmetologist. I mean, you’re already at the shampoo bowl so you might as well spend those few extra minutes on your client.— I had a client who said, “ugh this is always the worst part, the bowl always hurts my neck.” So I added a towel to cushion her neck and made sure she was comfortable before I started shampooing, and then proceeded to give her a scalp massage, which was actually her first and she loved it! Needless to say, she rebooked with me, so those few extra minutes can be crucial.”
The Next Step
Graduation comes quick once your doing something you enjoy and with that in mind Brianna shares what her plans are for after school, “My brother actually owns his own barber shop that has a salon on the second floor, so my plan is to work there after I get my cosmetology license.”
“Even though I have some time left in school, I offer some words of advice for other prospective students, get all your requirements out of the way ASAP! There is always something to be done, and eventually time runs out, so get those requirements done so when the time comes it’ll be easy to transition onto the next step,” offered Brianna.
