Cosmetology Student Success Story: Ken Ly

After getting to see all his amazing talent all over social media, it came to no surprise that Ken Ly was recognized for all his hard work this past month through our Bellevue campus. You can see the passion and talent through Ken Ly’s work and I can not wait to share it with you.

 About Ken Ly

Even with the obstacles laid out in front of Ken Ly, he still pursued his dreams. Dedication and hard work was what landed Ken Ly in cosmetology school where he is making an impact and succeeding in his new skills.

“I have always wanted to be a hair dresser when I was younger and in Vietnam. My cousin owned a hair salon back in Vietnam and I was always hanging around there and  helping her out. I don’t know why but every time I had the opportunity to help touch hair I felt happy and loved. Ever since then, I knew for sure what I wanted to do for my career. I had a hard time trying to convince my dad to let me study cosmetology in Vietnam [and after trying repeatedly he still wouldn’t] let me follow my dream there. Once I moved to the United States my dad finally understood that it is a free country and he should let me do whatever it was that I wanted to do in life. I didn’t have a high school diploma when I moved here to the states so I couldn’t go to cosmetology school right away, I had to go back and study 3 years of high school so I could get my diploma,” shared Ken.

“I’ve heard a lots good thing about Evergreen Beauty College and the founder is Vietnamese and so I am so feeling secure knowing our backgrounds are similar. Evergreen’s Bellevue campus is close to where I live and work, [so that is a benefit as well] when it came time to choosing a school,” states Ken Ly.

The Evergreen Experience

We asked Ken about his days at Evergreen, what were areas that have helped him along the way and the areas of his strengths so he shares:

“All the assignments so far in school have been helpful. Plus I really like that we have guest speakers that come in to the school because we get to know about different product lines and salons outside of school.

I also love that we have done a photoshoot project, an assignment that gave us a chance to be creative and to learn a lot of different techniques about styling hair (A photo of blue butterfly hair in my Instagram is my group work).”

“I have heard that my attitude and personality sets me apart from other stylist. I’m funny and loved by my peers. I also love to make everyone happy and laugh [while they are with me getting a service]. One of the reasons clients should book with me is for the simple fact that I will make them feel relaxed when they sit in my chair and to feel more confident about their fabulous self’s when they look in the mirror,” states Ken.

“I would say color and woman hair in general are strengths of mine, I also know how to braid pretty well. I’m pretty lucky that I’ve received many color services since starting on the floor. Still needing to practice everything so I can be a good hair dresser and colorist. After I’m done with my program I might study Make-up Artistry as well,” says Ken Ly.

 The Next Step

Where to next? “I want to find a salon that offers continuing education while I work. I also want to keep studying, getting more advanced education so I can be the best and offer the best to future clients. I want to build my experience and my clientele for a couple years and then I will think about opening my own salon, ” says Ken. Advanced education is huge because our industry is always changing, and getting better. We have to keep up on trends and the best effective ways to achieve those results.

Ken shared some advice for anyone looking to follow their dreams and enroll into beauty school, “If you choose this school to build your career, you choose the right one! Keep asking questions in order to learn and keep doing fabulous work.”

Mr. Ken Ly is set to graduate this October 2018 and what better way to support him other than to come in and get a service done by him at our Bellevue campus!
