Cosmetology Student Success Story: Marvin Martinez
Yakima recently recognized one of their Cosmetology students, Marvin Martinez, as he’s creating habits towards success in school.
About Marvin Martinez
A story similar to many of our own, Marvin shares a little of where this journey started. “Before school I worked in the agriculture field. Moving to different locations, and helping out different companies. As a hobby though, I’ve always enjoyed coloring my own hair. When I first started coloring my own hair I actually used box hair dye, not realizing how bad it was for your hair! Shortly after I found that out I started getting my color from Sally’s. With the product from a beauty supplier I felt like I got better results lightening my own hair, coming out more evenly, and less patchy looking like most “at home services”. In time I got better at it to a point where others started suggesting I try getting into beauty school. I had always responded by saying it was just something that I did for fun! With more thought, I realized why not get paid to do what I already enjoyed doing? That’s when I made the connection and decided to look into schools.”
“Before I chose Evergreen, I reviewed other beauty schools that were close to me, and a lot of reviews from other schools didn’t seem too appealing. Once I read up on Evergreen Beauty College and seen good reviews, I decided to take a tour of the school. At my very first visit there, I felt it had such a homey vibe right front the start. Like it seemed family oriented with friendly staff. I met with the educators as well as current students and they were all so very welcoming. And I knew after that first meeting I wanted to be apart of it!” adds Marvin.
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the Cosmetology program with us Mr. Marvin has shared some of his highlights of what he has enjoyed, what has helped him so far and what sets him apart from other Cosmetologists:
“The thing I love most about Cosmetology is color because there are ALWAYS new trends, and new things to try. With so many techniques to learn and incorporate into my services, along with new and interesting colors to try I know there will never be a dull moment!”
“So far the projects in school that I’ve found most helpful are the salon ownership experience; creating your own salon and looking into the expenses it would cost to operate: licenses, utilities, and basically everything else it would take to open and run your own salon. Our second project I have valued was the job interviews we worked on. I feel like that’s not something people often get any kind of training in, especially in this field. No one says this is how an interview goes, these are typical questions asked, and these responses aren’t exactly professional (using words such as um, like, uhh frequently) and how to dress and present yourself. Being able to walk away with this knowledge has been extremely helpful.”
“As for something that sets me apart, I think it would be that I’m able to see things very differently. I am very observant. Therefore I take a situation, analyze everything down to the smallest of details, and if there is anything left that I don’t understand I will not hesitate to ask any and all questions. When it comes time to execute the decision of how to deal with any situation I don’t want to be surprised by any problems that may surface so I like having all the information before beginning. This being my biggest area I stand out in from the rest of my ‘competition’. I look at how my client is currently, I ask what exactly they are wanting to achieve, how much are they willing to invest in their hair, and then I will map out the entire process of getting them from where they are to what it is they want to be exactly. I’ll tell them it may take time and be a process but I will do everything in my power to put in the time and effort to make sure it is to their satisfaction. Also knowing that the client is comfortable with me and my services is huge!” Marvin shares.
The Next Step
Mr. Marvin shares that the ultimate end goal is to have his own salon. For the time being though, he’ll be looking into salons to work for, one where he can get experience behind the chair without needing help. “Also I want to see how a typical salon operates and how to handle clients who are often times a bit harder to please or clients that may not know what they want done to their hair. I feel like these are the opportunities that will really let me show my talent and build the skill set I’ll need in order to own my own place,” Marvin says.
“The advice I’d give to the incoming future professionals would be: to not to be afraid to ask questions, ask the educators or even the future professionals around you because you might not be the only one wondering that same thing. Also don’t ever be afraid to try something new. When I first started school I absolutely loved Avant garde styles and now I’m confident in myself to replicate them where I wouldn’t have been originally. Same with colors and/or cuts. Do what scares you the most because it’ll only push you outside your comfort zone where you’ll want to do more and to be more confident in the end,” offered Marvin as he finishes the last month of his program.
