Washington Has the Third Highest Starting Wage for Hairdressers. Here’s Why

Working as a Washington hairdresser has several perks. If you live in the area and love working with people this might be the career you’re looking for. It’s interesting to note that the state has the third highest starting wage for hairdressers. Continue reading, to learn more about some of the other things that make this job so great.

Average Earning Potential

According to Chron, Washinton based hairstylists can earn an average of $16.42 per hour., which is well above minimum wage. Even better, this figure can be even higher, depending on the person’s specialties and whether or not he or she works in a salon setting or is self-employed.

Just as a comparison, Hawaii comes in next with average earnings of $17.16 per hour. If you’ve ever dreamed about living in Hawaii, this is certainly something worth your consideration.

Job Growth

It’s no secret that the beauty industry is booming and currently there seems to be no end in sight. Projected growth between now and 2022 is approximately 13 percent. This is somewhat higher than the overall job growth rate of 11 percent, for the same period. This means there will be approximately 688,700 jobs for hairdressers (nationwide) in 2022.

Tuition and Program Length

Studying to be a hairdresser, whether in Washington or any other state, is a particularly wise idea for two reasons… tuition costs and program length. Compared to even a traditional two-year degree, the cost associated with beauty school is typically quite a bit less. In addition, depending on your school of choice, you could be licensed in as little as 7 to 9 months.

This is fantastic news for single parents or those with a full-time job who want to study part-time. Typically, as long as the school is accredited, financial aid or some type of work-study program is readily available to students who qualify.

Currently, average tuition costs range from approximately $2,700 to $24,005. Again, this is dependent on the program you choose to enroll in.
