A Guide to Cosmetology License Application

The cosmetology license is mandatory in most states. If you want to practice the profession in Washington, then you will have to acquire a state license. There are two ways to achieves this: either through training in a cosmetology school or through apprenticeship under a licensed cosmetologist. Once the necessary skills have been learned, you can take the board exam to prove your proficiency. People who come from other states, and would like to practice in Washington may do so as well. If they have already obtained a license from their old state, then they don’t have to go through school or apprenticeship anymore. They may file their license application directly.

Cosmetology School

Washington imposes a minimum training period of 1,600 hours for aspiring cosmetologists. Be sure to take a program that satisfies this requirement in order to be eligible for a cosmetology license. If you are not keen on going back to school, then find a licensed cosmetologist who is willing to take you on as his or her apprentice. Note that this will require an even longer training period of 2,000 hours and it has to take place in a state-recognized salon. You will not be able to find an exhaustive list of licensed salons in Washington so your best bet is to ask industry veterans about this. They should be able to point you to establishments that offer both modes of training.

Out-of-State Cosmetology License Applicants

If you are already a licensee from elsewhere, then you’ll be happy to know that the state will usually recognize your status. You will have to submit a written document from your state’s board affirming your license. Your licensure exam must have also encompassed both the written and practice tests. Finally, you must be 17 years or older at the time of your application. The Washington license application form can be found online. Download the one for out-of-state applicants and fill it up. Pay the associated fees by sending a check to the Washington State Treasurer at the Cosmetology Section of the Department of Licensing.

Cosmetology License Exam

If you need to take the exam, then it’s best to prepare for it as early as possible. The National Testing Network assumes responsibility for the conduct of the exams. Search for their Candidate Exam Guide as it contains a wealth of information that will surely help applicants get high marks. It will offer advice on preparation and registration. You can log into their website by getting your special username and password at your school’s relevant office. The examinations can be paid for via credit card through their secure site. Should you pass the test, then the site will also process your cosmetology license application.
