Choosing The Right Esthetics School

Esthetics schools teach students about skin care and cosmetology. In most states, a high quality education is required to be licensed as an esthetician. This makes choosing an esthetic school vitally important to your future career.

Choosing Your Esthetics School

Here is a list of some things to consider when trying to figure out which esthetics school is right for you:

Identifying The Best Esthetics Schools

The best schools teach esthetics techniques and skills through both classroom lectures and real life experiences. Some esthetics schools offer online coursework. If you are interested in going this route, ensure it includes some in-person hands-on training as well. You’ll need to practice many of these techniques before you can graduate and become licensed in most states.

Some schools offer an Associate’s degree while others only offer a course completion certificate. This usually depends on your state’s requirements for licensing and how long you go to school. Some certificate programs can last for as little as 12 months while Associate’s degree programs typically take two years. A degree is not necessarily better than a certificate. It just depends on your needs and what is required in your state.

Consider What You Will Learn in Esthetics School

If you know what topics interest you the most, choose a school whose training courses match your interests. Some schools only offer general esthetician courses while others have more in-depth coursework. In the more in-depth programs, you will take classes focused on specific techniques such as exfoliation, chemical peels, makeup artistry and hair removal.

Look at the coursework required for graduation. Many schools offer classes such as business management, customer service and even accounting. Others offer opportunities to study communication methods and improve your communication skills.

These schools offer a more well-rounded education than those that only offer esthetician techniques in their classes.

Consider Your Future Licensure

Make sure the schools you are considering are accredited, and are approved by your state board. This is especially true if you are looking to learn online, because some states require that you attend in-person lectures and acquire hands-on training before you will be licensed.

Choose an in-state school. The licensing procedures vary by state, and most programs are designed to help students meet these requirements. While it is possible to become licensed in another state, it is usually easier to just earn your degree in the state where you plan to work. This is true of all cosmetology fields.

Pay Them a Visit

Visit each of your final considerations. Each esthetician school is different, and one may fit your personal style better than the others. Once you’ve narrowed your choices to two to four, visit the campuses in person. Talk with students and teachers, and see which one feels best to you.

Choosing the esthetics school that best fits your needs is possibly the most important decision of your career. Evergreen Beauty College provides students at its three Washington state campuses with a high-quality education that helps to launch them into successful careers in the esthetics field.
