Cosmetology Student Success Story: Maria Guevara

This past month our Renton campus was able to recognize one of their future professionals, Ms. Maria Guevara, as she has shown the importance of her brand in this industry. Successful marketing techniques has her on her way to becoming a force to be reckon with as she easily builds her clientele.

About Maria Guevara

Some individuals find themselves being drawn into this amazing industry because they connect to it in one way or another. Either with the help of others or by having that deep down passion for the endless canvas of hair. “My interest in cosmetology really came about when I kept noticing friends and family making comments about how I should get into beauty school because of all the creative ideas I’d do on any of my family or my hair. I’ve always loved doing different things with my hair, whether its color, cuts or styles. It’s just something that I’ve always found fun to do and that’s kept me interested over the years. Prior to enrolling into beauty school though, I was a stay at home mom apart from seasonal work. During the summers I typically would go over to Eastern Washington and work at packing warehouses that focused on preparing cherries or apples for different shipments,” shares Maria.

Maria shares with us her reason for choosing Evergreen Beauty College over other beauty schools in her area, “The main reason I choose Evergreen Beauty College was for the fact that they offered a business program; Nuts and Bolts (a.k.a. NaB), within the different programs. It interest me because I know it will help me out in the future when and if I ever want to open my own business!”

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the cosmetology program with us Ms. Maria has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far and what sets her apart from other cosmetologist:

“As I finish up my time here in school, I’ve learned all the different services I can offer, but out of all of them I would say that doing balayages and ombrés are an absolute favorite part of my program. I love doing them!!! Now take that amazing color service and finish up with some beachy wave curls. Not all clients will add in the thermal curls, but I love how they polish a look!”

“Learning different techniques from different educators over the past months has been the best type of assignments I’ve had or could’ve asked for. I’m that hands on learner, and love seeing the many different ways I could do and complete a service. Whether it’s a balayage technique or learning techniques to do long layers. I’m not picky, just motivated and intrigued and I feel that because I have this drive it has helped me to develop what I would now consider my strength; hair coloring, and in any form I can get. Especially balayages!”

“As for what set me apart from other stylist in this industry, well, I guess I would have to say that having smile on my face. Even when I’m having a bad day or facing a hard time with a difficult client. My clients can always expect to be greeted with a smile. I’m able to listen to them, trying to give them exactly what they want as well as being good company around them and checking on them while I’m on the process of doing their hair. I feel my clients can feel that I am truly there for them!”

The Next Step

With graduation not too far off, Maria is looking into different options where she can set up shop and continue to build her clientele. “Working in a salon close to home is where I plan to start after I complete my schooling and pass my boards. There are a couple of different salons specifically that I have in mind at the moment. Who knows, possibly in a few years or so I may want to open up my own salon (something on the smaller side and not too large) and utilize my NaB training,” Maria expressed.

It’s easy to vere of course but Maria shares advice for the incoming future professionals and those currently attending beauty school, “Do your best and be at your best. Go above and beyond. When your not with a client, work on your mannequin, try to farther your education by learning from different educators or shadow different stylists at different salons. Someone once told me practice makes perfect, and that’s the truth!”

Ms. Maria Guevara is set to graduate this coming October 2019 and what better way to support her other than to stop by our Renton campus!
