Cosmetology Student Success Story: Jake Topinio

Everyone, please meet Jake Topinio, Renton’s Digital Marketing Award winner for the month of August! Jake started his journey after moving to Washington from Hawaii, where he was already making a name for himself in the barbering community. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to, not only leave home, but to pair that with the nerves of starting at a new school and to excel the way he has. We are all so proud of you, Jake, and how much you have already accomplished while being here at Evergreen!

About Jake

Jake’s background is barbering, however, he made the decision to not limit himself to just barbering capabilities and explore Cosmetology. “After graduating from college and obtaining my Bachelors Degree in Business, I worked in the accounting department for 2 years at an interior design firm back at home in Hawaii. Entering the ‘adult’ world dealing with my finances was quite difficult. I came across an Instagram post called ‘The Self-Cut System’ and got fascinated with the three-way mirror. From there on, I started to cut my own hair and managed to save without spending money at the barbershop every 2 weeks. This product gave me the power to take control of my style in every haircut that I do. I learned how to use the clippers properly from using just guards to learning how to do different kinds of fades. Once I learned how to fade, I started doing my own hair tattoo designs. I first started off with the usual part line then went on and did more complex designs. I have come a long way with The Self-Cut System. I’ve made several self-cutting videos to a point where I would get re-blogged on well known barber accounts on Instagram. From there on, my hair journey began. I decided to go to Cosmetology school at Evergreen Beauty College, Renton, to learn more about hair for men and women.”

The Evergreen Experience

When a student has previous experience in the industry, whether it be on Instagram or in a professional salon, I am always so curious to know why they chose Evergreen over other schools. “I chose Evergreen Beauty College because I am able to work with people of various backgrounds, which means I am able to practice with different types of hair textures. I enjoy learning the broad scope of what a Cosmetologist needs to know. For example, I have learned about hair extensions, braiding and even chemical services in which I haven’t had any experience with.”

We were also curious to know what Jake’s specialties are and why clients should book with him. “My favorite service that I like to do is the different types of fades. I enjoy paying attention to detail, especially making sure there are no lines in the fades that I do.

The length of the hair, even if it’s just a millimeter long, really makes a difference. Having a fade adds a dimension of ‘freshness’ to a person’s style and many people are getting this cut nowadays.”

The Next Step

Upon graduation, Jake has some big hopes and dreams in store and we have no doubt that he will be able to accomplish each and every one of them! “[I] want to work in an upscale barbershop for a year or two (as well as being a mobile hairstylist) and go wherever life takes me with having my main dream of living and working in the Big Apple–New York City one day.”

We asked Jake if he had any advice for any of our future students and I can thoroughly appreciate his advice! “I always tell everyone and myself: if you don’t know where you are in 5 years, then you’re already there. Have a dream, invest in time, and get motivated.”

It’s September and many consider it to be the beginning of the busy holiday season. Jake is on schedule to graduate in January, so make sure to book your appointment with him so he can take care of you during this busy time of year!
