Digital Marketing Award: Shelby Wunch

Sometimes in life, people discover their passions at a young age. Others it takes a little time to figure out their path. Luckily, for our Digital Marketing Award winner for the month of May at our Renton Campus, Shelby Wunch, she always knew that hair was her passion. She had been doing not only her own hair, but her friends’ hair as well, for many years before beauty college. Whether it be coloring, braiding, men’s cuts, or a variety of other styles, she did it all! We were very happy to hear all about Shelby’s story, her journey through school so far, and what her plans are for the future.

About Shelby

Shelby has had a love for hair since she was a little girl. So much so that she was not allowed to go to a Valentine’s Day party in the 4th grade because she got into trouble for cutting her hair and another boy’s hair in her class. That is one of her mom’s favorite stories to tell.

One thing that Shelby loves most is fashion colors. She says, “My whole life is bright and bold colors. It makes me happy to be able to bring that to others as well.” Shelby has shown nothing but dedication to her clients. She always has a positive, upbeat and friendly attitude while with clients. They always seem to walk away with a smile. She is willing to go above and beyond for her clients and fellow Future Professionals. “Any help or extra time needed to get through the day with a smile on our face and happy returning clients is all our salon needs.”

The Evergreen Experience

As soon as Shelby walked through the doors of our Renton Campus, she said “I felt that the warm and inviting environment was a place I could see myself. I thought the educators, who were more than happy to introduce themselves to me and explain what they were working on, seemed kind and genuine. This school is so focused on the students well-being and success, more than anything else. That is something that I’ve appreciated so much since I’ve been here. I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else!” We love hearing that! Our Future Professionals are definitely our main priority here at Evergreen!

While in the Cosmetology Program, our Future Professionals also touch on skin care as well! That was one of Shelby’s favorite things so far in her program. Although a little surprised by it she said, “The small portion of esthetics that we learn (waxing and facials) has been what I’ve enjoyed most about my program. I’ve found waxing to be my new addiction. I had never known a whole lot about skin care and have struggled with my own skin for years. It’s nice to know where I can adjust my regimen and help others with theirs.”

The Next Step

Shelby is set to graduate in March of 2018. Once she does, we were curious to see what her plans were for her future. She said that she would love to try a couple different salons or barber shops to get a feel for the industry. After that she has other plans. She said, “Honestly, I’d like to go out and gain some real life experience and then come back here to Evergreen and take the Instructor Training course and learn to teach. I inadvertently started helping others with their school work as soon as I got to school and didn’t quite think of it until other student suggested it to me. Now that I’ve thought about it, it makes perfect sense to me!

When asked, Shelby said, “Come in with a smile, a willingness to learn and improve, and a love for hair. If you bring all of these things, and a pen(!) every single day, there is only success in your future!” Those are wonderful words of advice Shelby!
